Vasyl Lomachenko v Anthony Crolla Betting Tips Explained

You have to give Anthony Crolla some serious credit for stepping up and taking on the challenge of facing Vasyl Lomachenko, but ‘Million Dolla’ is not one for backing down from a challenge. The 32-year-old refused to hang up his gloves after suffering horrific injuries while confronting burglars near his home, and in his first fight back he challenged Darleys Perez for the WBA lightweight title. He was denied a fairytale outing by some controversial scoring by the judges, but the governing body quickly ordered a rematch and this time Crolla took the outcome out of the hands of those at ringside, finishing the champion with a crunching left-hook to the body in round five.

Crolla managed one successful defence of the belt before dropping it to Jorge Linares in September 2016, and when the two men met again the following March he was outclassed on the way to another unanimous decision defeat. He has rebounded since then however, with three straight victories, but can he really make it four-in-a-row by becoming only the second man to beat WBA (Super), WBO and Ring Magazine lightweight champion Lomachenko?

“I cannot wait for this,” Crolla said. “These are the fights you are in the sport for. People will say that I have got nothing to lose, but I am genuinely going over to LA to shock the world. I will concentrate on me.  Firstly, I have to make sure the best Anthony Crolla turns up that night. I'm not worried about that.

“Preparing for Lomachenko is hard because he's so unorthodox. He's that good that when he does something wrong he gets away with it. You wouldn't teach some of the things that he does. He's so unique in that respect.”

Lomachenko does have one defeat on his record – a controversial split decision loss in only his second professional fight – but since that night he has reeled off 11 straight victories and only one of the 31-year-old Ukrainian’s last nine opponents have managed to go the distance with him. He has surged to the very top of the pound-for-pound ladder by becoming a three-weight world champion after only 13 professional fights, and that says all you need to know about the size of the task Crolla will be facing when he steps into the ring at the Staples Center.

However, have we seen some weaknesses recently? Lomachenko was dropped by Linares, the man who dethroned Crolla in 2016, before he came storming back to stop the Venezuelan in round 10, and in that fight he suffered a dislocated shoulder that required surgery. He has insisted that he is 100% healthy after that operation, but we all know that shoulder problems are not so easy to overcome when you are a professional fighter so that is something to keep in mind here.

On the flip side though, he beat Linares after dislocating his shoulder in round two. That simply cannot be overlooked. Lomachenko fought one of the best lightweight fighters on the planet while carrying a serious injury and he did not just survive to get a decision win, he flourished on his way to stopping the then-WBA champion in the 10th. So after that sort of performance in that sort of situation, how can we go against him here?

Crolla is a good fighter with a great heart and that should prevent him from being blown out quickly, but ultimately Lomachenko will prove to be too much for him. The champion’s southpaw awkwardness, technique, speed, footwork and punching power will help him break down the challenger, and if the Ukrainian does not stop Crolla himself I would not be shocked to see the Mancunian’s corner throw in the towel to save their man.
