Terence Crawford v Amir Khan Betting Tips Explained

Amir Khan disappointed British fight fans when he announced that his next opponent would not be domestic rival Kell Brook, but it would be unfair to fire criticism his way because the Bolton fighter has not done it to take an easier fight. Instead he has done it to challenge unbeaten WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford – a man considered to be in the pound-for-pound number one discussion after amassing a perfect 34-0 record since turning pro over a decade ago.

You see, that is the thing with Khan. He can be accused of ducking Brook, but the one thing he cannot be accused of is avoiding tough fights. Yes, last year’s ‘bout’ with Phil LoGreco was nothing short of farcical, but he stepped up the level of competition when he took on Samuel Vargas later in the year and when you look at the 32-year-old’s CV you will see that has shared the ring with a whole host of big-name fighters, including Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

He now adds Crawford to his list of high-profile opponents when the two men meet in one of the world’s most famous sporting venues on April 20, but can Khan pull off a gigantic upset and leave Madison Square Garden as welterweight champion of the world? Unsurprisingly, he believes he can.

“I had all these options to have easier fights, fights that I know I can go in and win, but I just wanted that test,” Khan told talkSPORT. “I wanted to bring that love back into it but also that fear as well that things can go wrong if I’m not switched on.

“This is a fight that’s going to bring the best out of me and at the same time, there’s a world title on the line and that’s only going to inspire me and motivate me to put on a greater performance.

“Whenever I’m the underdog, I always perform well. Most of my life, going back to when I was fighting in the Olympics at 17, I’ve been the underdog and nobody expected me to do anything. It’s the same again in this fight: no one is going to expect me to do anything. I think I can win this fight and hopefully shock the world.”

But does anybody outside of his camp or his fanbase believe that Khan can dethrone Crawford here? The former Olympian produced an underwhelming display as he survived a knockdown to beat Samuel Vargas on the scorecards last September, and that outing did plenty to suggest that the challenger is firmly on the downward curve in his career. And even if you overlook the lacklustre performance in the hope of picking out some positives, you will still see that same old Khan fight ‘story’.

He starts off very well, utilising his incredible hand speed to unsettle the opponent, and in Vargas’ case knock him down, but eventually the opponent gets his timing down, takes control of the fight and delivers another one of those unsettling knockouts that has you fearing for Khan’s health. He troubled Alvarez early on before getting knocked out in absolutely devastating fashion three years ago, and I expect we will see similar scenes here.

Khan will start well and pose a few questions for the unbeaten champion, but as the fight wears on Crawford will begin to test the challengers’ chin and we all know what will happen then. The champion will uncork a shot that sends Khan crumbling to the canvas and leave the Bolton fighter with only one high-profile option if he decides to return to the boxing ring this year or next – Kell Brook.
