Mikey Garcia v Adrien Broner Betting Tips Explained

No belts, just bragging rights are on the line in this showdown between two men who have won world titles in multiple weight divisions. But while unbeaten Mikey Garcia has emerged as one of the most highly-rated talents in US boxing, Adrien Broner is a man considered to be one of the biggest wastes of boxing talent in the modern era.

One quick Google search will tell you a lot about Broner with a string of articles laying into the Cincinnati fighter. Waste of talent, under-achiever – those are just a couple of tags that have been attached to the 27-year-old despite a 33-2 career that has seen him become a four-weight world champion. And why is that? Because Broner could have arguably achieved much more in the sport if his work ethic matched his mouth, but instead his laziness has made him just another boxer that has had a good career and won a few world titles along the way.

Garcia, meanwhile, has forged a reputation as a potential superstar. Having been liken to Mexican greats like Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera, the 29-year-old has flourished in the featherweight, super-featherweight and lightweight divisions to win three world titles, with his most recent success coming back in January when he became the first man to stop – and beat – Dejan Zlaticanin for the WBC lightweight championship.

Garcia has now made the decision to move up in weight – this will be fought at a catchweight of 140lbs - and the bookmakers are backing the Californian to make it 37-0. The 29-year-old is an odds-on favourite with the bookies and that is no real surprise because you never truly know what you are going to get from Broner. He has suffered two defeats in his career, but both of those came at welterweight – against Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter – and it could be argued that the drop to super-lightweight should suit him.

Garcia, of course, will be hoping the added weight adds to his impressive punching power that has earned him an 83% knockout ratio, but on the this occasion he is coming up against a man that is bigger than him and has taken shots from some hard-hitting welterweights and not been stopped. He may struggle to truly hurt Broner here, and it could also be argued that he has never faced a man as skilled as ‘The Problem’. For all of the criticism you can throw at Ohio native, he is a very talented fighter and his CV does boast a better level of opposition than Garcia’s.

So on this occasion I am backing the big man in the fight. We saw it when Kell Brook stepped inside the ring with Gennady Golovkin and Amir Khan stepped up to face Saul Alvarez. Sometimes the opponent is just too big to handle and I think it will be the case here with Broner having his hand raised at the Brooklyn Center.
