Jorge Linares v Anthony Crolla Betting Tips Explained

Anthony Crolla’s fairytale reign as WBA lightweight champion proved to be a rather brief one as he was dethroned last September. The popular Mancunian became an incredibly popular figure among boxing fans after he fought back from career-threatening injuries he suffered while trying to stop a burglary at a neighbour’s house, and British fight fans were delighted when he was granted a second shot at world champion Darleys Perez following a controversial draw in July 2015.

Crolla took his second chance in spectacular fashion as he stopped Perez in the fifth round and he then pulled off what some considered to be another upset when he stopped Ismael Barroso in the seventh round of his maiden title defence. However, taking on former three-weight world champion Jorge Linares was always going to be a difficult task for ‘Million Dolla’ and that proved to be the case as the challenger deservedly got the nod from all three judges.

Linares was not just content with winning the title and putting Crolla behind him though, and the Venezuelan fighter confirmed afterwards that he was more than willing to give the former WBA champion an opportunity to regain the belt. Crolla gets that opportunity on March 25 and Linares has even agreed to step into ‘enemy territory’ once again by defending the belt in the challenger’s home time of Manchester. So can Crolla delight the home crowd by becoming a two-time champion?

“Linares is seen as the best lightweight in the world and I want to stake my claim to that title,” Crolla told Sky Sports News HQ. “I have to be smart ahead of the fight, work with my team and make the improvements that I believe will make a world of difference. Last time I came up short, there wasn't loads in it, but the right man definitely won. This time the result will be different. In the first fight he moved really well, so I need to cut off the ring better. I will come back bigger and stronger. Adding to my strength, power and speed will make me better all round and it will show under the lights.”

The bookmakers do not share Crolla’s confidence however, and neither do I. I am a big fan of Crolla as a man and a fighter and would love to see him back at the top of the lightweight ladder, but that first fight is something I cannot ignore. The Mancunian did not help himself by starting slowly, but even when he got back into the bout it was Linares who was producing the better work and landing the more eye-catching punches. I see that being the case again here, with Crolla pushing the champion for the full 12 rounds before the judges come down on the side of the visiting fighter.
