George Groves v Fedor Chudinov Betting Tips Explained

George Groves will get another crack at becoming a world champion when he fights Fedor Chudinov for the vacant WBA super-middleweight title on the undercard of the Kell Brook-Errol Spence Jr fight at Bramall Lane, but will ‘The Saint’ make it fourth time lucky after a hat-trick of failures in world title fights?

Groves got his first crack at a world title when he challenged Carl Froch back in November 2013, and he made a blistering start to the fight by dropping the then WBA & IBF champion in the first round. All three judges had him ahead on the scorecards when the ninth round got underway, but his title dream went up in smoke when Froch rocked him and the referee stepped in as Groves stumbled across the ring.

Many observers felt the stoppage was early and that led to a massive rematch in front of 80,000-plus at Wembley Stadium, and there would be no controversy on that night as Froch landed a brutal right hook in the eighth round that sent Groves crumpling to the canvas with no chance of answering the referee’s count.

Groves rebounded with back-to-back wins to land another shot at a world title in September 2015, but once again he came up short as he dropped a split decision to Badou Jack – leaving many questioning whether or not he would ever fulfil his dream.

A change of trainer and four wins later, we will find out because Groves has another shot at becoming super-middleweight champion. ‘The Saint’ will take on Fedor Chudinov, who is getting a shot at regaining the WBA championship he controversially lost to Felix Sturm via majority decision over a year ago, and the Englishman is confident he will not come up short this time.

“Fourth attempt, but the right time,” he told Sky Sports News HQ. “Some people thought it was a foregone conclusion that I would beat Badou Jack but I was fighting away from home on a Floyd Mayweather card. I ended up losing a split decision, but this time it's in the UK. Chudinov's a very tough eastern European fighter but I feel that I've got the beating of him. He hasn't boxed anyone as good as me.”

I share his confidence. Chudinov will be looking to right the injustice of that defeat to Sturm (many felt he should have got the nod from the judges and the German later failed a drug test), but he has never faced an opponent with the hand speed and punching power that Groves possesses. ‘The Saint’ will not stop the Russian in Sheffield, but he should outpoint him over 12 rounds to earn the judges’ backing and his first world title.
