Canelo Alvarez v Daniel Jacobs Betting Tips Explained

Cinco de Mayo weekend cannot be allowed to pass without Mexican boxing star Canelo Alvarez having a fight scheduled, but unlike last year when the fight was shelved due to a failed drugs test, the middleweight world champion will be in action on May 4 and he is looking to add another world title to his collection because standing opposite the WBA, WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight champion will be IBF title-holder Daniel Jacobs.

It is a fight that has got fans excited in an age where we seem to find plenty of boxers avoiding each other, and many believe the winner of this bout will be considered the pound-for-pound number one going forward. Alvarez, who has only lost once in his career, against Floyd Mayweather Jr, is confident that that man will be him, but he is certainly not taking anything for granted against his gifted and gutsy opponent.

“[Jacob’s] an opponent that is very complete,” Alvarez told reporters through a translator. “He knows how to obviously change guards from southpaw to orthodox. He knows how to move in the ring.

“We know the risk of this fight and it is a high-risk fight. A fighter of my experience, of my level, has to adapt and know how to adapt to all levels. That’s what we’re preparing for. We’re working very hard to prepare and come out with the victory.”

Jacobs, of course, begs to differ on the outcome and he is confident that he can use his “physical advantage” as well as his boxing skills and IQ to become only the second man to beat Alvarez inside a professional boxing ring.

“He has one of the best skill sets that’s out there,” Jacobs told reporters during a conference call. “His sense of onslaught, his upper body movement, his defence is really good. There’s really not much that you can kind of, you know, battle through and say that, you can do this and you can do that.

“What I know is that I have the physical advantages, and I look forward to using my physical advantage, my reach, height, range, and being that I also have speed, power, ring IQ, as well, that’s what I feel like is going to make me victorious.”

And if you are looking for more trash talk than that, I am afraid that is all you are getting from these two men. In an age were fighters like to drum up some false hatred and pull of stunts to raise eyebrows, these two men have conducted themselves in a classy manner with the focus being solely on what will happen in the ring on May 4. And what could happen in the ring is a fantastic fight between a pair of talented practitioners of the ‘sweet science’. So who takes it?

Jacobs’ story is a remarkable one. He rebuilt his career after a devastating – and shocking – knockout defeat back in July 2010, and he was then forced to fight for his life when he was diagnosed with cancer. ‘The Miracle Man’ won that battle too and not only did he return to the boxing ring, he returned in impressive fashion by reeling off a string of stoppage victories to land a shot at the then-unbeaten Gennady Golovkin – widely considered the P-4-P number one at that time.

Jacobs was dropped early in that one but, just like he did after surviving cancer, he came battling back to become the first man to go 12 rounds with Golovkin, and afterwards many thought he had done enough to win the fight or at least earn a draw. The judges did not see it that way however, but on that night he showed why he will be a huge test for Canelo on May 4. So will the WBA, WBC and Ring Magazine pass it and add the IBF middleweight title to his collection?

I believe he will. Alvarez will have a size and reach advantage to overcome, but he is outstanding at controlling distance and that large body of Jacobs is something he will attack with his brutal body punches. Canelo knows he is not going to take the IBF champion out early, so he needs to bide his time, fight smart, get in and out and wear him down before moving up through the gears in the second half of the fight. Jacobs will not make it easy for Canelo, but ultimately Alvarez will be the one getting the nod from the judges when all 12 rounds are in the books.
