Callum Smith v Erik Skoglund Predictions

Callum Smith v Erik Skoglund Betting Tips Explained

The first round of the World Boxing Super Series gets underway on Saturday, September 16 when highly-rated Callum Smith – the bookmakers’ outright favourite – faces undefeated Swedish fighter Erik Skoglund for the WBC Diamond Championship at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

“There are no easy fights in this tournament,” Smith said. “It’s the best fighting the best, but I believe I made the right decision in Monte Carlo [selecting Skoglund as his opponent]. That’s not to say he is not a good fighter. I think he is a very good fighter. His record speaks for itself, but I think stylistically, he was the right choice for me. It will be a tough test. On paper, Skoglund is probably the best fighter I’ve ever faced, and I will need to be at my best to beat him. But every time I’ve been up against it in my career and every time there’s been that fear factor, it’s brought out the best in me.”

“This is a huge opportunity for me to prove myself at the highest level,” Skoglund said. ‘’Callum Smith is a top-level fighter and one of the tournament favourites. This is what the World Boxing Super Series is all about – the best fighting the best! That’s why I entered and that’s why I’m really looking forward to this fight. For me, it’s no problem fighting in Liverpool. Of course, I am always thankful for the opportunity to fight in front of my fans in Sweden, but I’m happy not having that pressure on my shoulders for this fight and I will enjoy being the underdog for once.”

Somebody’s ‘0’ has got to go in this fight and I fully expect it to be Skoglund’s. The 26-year-old Swede has decent punching power despite his knockout percentage being below 50% and he is accurate with his shots. A solid counter puncher, he is dangerous when he presses the action and in his last fight he did knock down his opponent, Timy Shala, several times en-route to an 11th round stoppage success.

However, Skoglund has – quite frankly – never stepped in the ring with a man of Smith’s calibre. The talented Liverpudlian is yet to face a major test in his professional career, but there are some decent fighters among his list of victims and his devastating punching power has resulted in an impressive 77% knockout ratio after 22 fights. Smith is quick to put together his combinations and those body shots of his are particularly brutal – a big reason why he has rarely gone the distance.

This is a decent first outing in the World Boxing Super Series for Smith and I am expecting nothing less than another convincing win for him. ‘Mundo’ will use his giant frame and body shots to wear down Skoglund before finishing off the Swede with those heavy hands. He has rarely gone beyond six rounds in his career, but with so much riding on this fight and against sturdy opposition, it could take the Liverpudlian until the second half of the fight to get his opponent out of there.
