Bookies back Vasyl Lomachenko to shine in UK debut

British fight fans are salivating over the prospect of Vasyl Lomachenko making his UK debut later this summer, and as far as the bookmakers are concerned it will be ‘business as usual’ for the world lightweight champion.

Lomachenko has staked a huge claim to be considered the pound-for-pound number one fighter on the planet in recent years, with his four-round blowout of Britain’s Anthony Crolla back in April being his latest successful defence of his WBA (Super), WBO and Ring Magazine titles.

The 31-year-old Ukrainian will now reportedly have an opportunity to add the WBC belt to his collection on August 31 when he travels to London to make his highly-anticipated UK debut against former Olympic gold medallist Luke Campbell at the o2 Arena, and the bookies are backing him to do just that with bet365 installing Lomachenko as an overwhelming 1/16 favourite for the fight.

But can Campbell spring a gigantic upset and become the first man to beat the Ukrainian since he suffered a split decision defeat at featherweight in only his second professional outing just over five years ago?

The Hull fighter suffered the first loss of his career back in December 2015 when he dropped a split decision to Yvan Mendy after an underwhelming performance, but he got his career back on track with a couple of domestic successes before landing himself a shot at the WBA and Ring Magazine belts by stopping former WBA title-holder Darleys Perez in just over two years ago.

That title shot ended in disappointment as Jorge Linares got the nod from two of the three judges, with an early knockdown proving to be very costly for Campbell, but the 31-year-old has once again forced his way into a world title shot thanks to a three-fight win streak that includes a revenge win over the first man to beat him, Yvan Mendy.

So can Campbell become a world champion at the second time of asking?

It is a huge ask for the Olympic gold medallist and that is reflected in the bookmakers’ odds with bet365 pricing him up as an 8/1 underdog for what is the biggest bout of his boxing career so far.
