Bookies back Paulie Malignaggi to beat Conor McGregor’s pal in bare knuckle debut

Paulie Malignaggi crosses over into the world of bare knuckle fighting when he faces former UFC fighter Artem Lobov on June 22, but will the former boxing world champion make a successful debut in the sport?

Ex-welterweight and junior welterweight champion Malignaggi hung up his boxing gloves over two years ago following a knockout defeat at the hands of a little-known British fighter, and since then he has been carving out a career as a television analyst for Sky Sports, earning plenty of praise.

However, during this time he has also taken every opportunity to call out UFC star Conor McGregor, both in the media and on social media.

Malignaggi sparred with McGregor as the Irishman prepared for his super-fight with unbeaten boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr back in the summer of 2017, but things turned sour between the two men when the MMA star’s camp released photos suggesting that the New Yorker had been dropped during those sessions.

‘Magic Man’ maintains those images do not tell the story of what really happened and has repeatedly challenged McGregor to face him in the ring to settle matters, but no deal between the two parties has ever been struck and it appears as though the 38-year-old American has perhaps found another way to lure his rival into the ring.

Malignaggi makes his bare knuckle fighting debut on Saturday, June 22 and he will do it against one of McGregor’s closest friends in Russian fighter Artem Lobov.

“To prepare for Artem, I hit the punching bag a lot more because Artem is basically a punching bag with legs,” he told MMAJunkie.com. “I wanted to get used to that and get my fists accustomed to it. We’ve also done some other things to be prepared specifically for my bare-knuckle debut.

“This is going to be a painful night for Artem. This is a world-class fighter against a punching bag with feet. He’s going to be very stubborn, but he’s going to get hit nonetheless. I think you’re going to see that I’m a different class of fighter. I’ve been a champion and I’ve been in the ring with many champions. He doesn’t have that experience. You’ll see what difference that makes on fight night.

“This fight ends with Lobov’s face falling off. I’m going to cut him up. I hope he lasts, because I want to beat him down round after round.”

Bookmaker Paddy Power is backing Malignaggi to live up to his boasts by winning the fight, making him an 8/15 favourite while considering Lobov a live underdog at 11/8, but will all of this finally lead to a fight between the ‘Magic Man’ and UFC superstar McGregor? Only time will tell!
