Wladmir Klitschko announces retirement & will not rematch Anthony Joshua

Wladimir Klitschko will not step into the ring with Anthony Joshua this November after announcing his retirement from boxing.

‘Dr Steelhammer’ was knocked out in the 11th round when he face Joshua in an epic fight at Wembley Stadium back in April, and promoter Eddie Hearn recently confirmed a rematch could take place in Las Vegas earlier this year.

However, that fight will not be happening after Klitschko, aged 41, announced he is hanging up his gloves on Thursday.

“I deliberately took a few weeks to make my decision, to make sure I had enough distance from the fight at Wembley Stadium,” Klitschko said in a video posted on his official Youtube channel.

“As an amateur and a professional boxer, I have achieved everything I dreamed of, and now I want to start my second career after sports.

“I would have never imagined that I would have such a long and incredibly successful boxing career. I'm very thankful for this. Thanks to everyone who has always supported me, especially my family, my team and my many fans.”

Anthony Joshua odds-on to beat Wladimir Klitschko in November rematch

Anthony Joshua is odds-on to do the double over Wladimir Klitschko after promoter Eddie Hearn revealed the rematch has been ‘pencilled in’ for November 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

90,000 fight fans descended on Wembley Stadium to see the two men fight in back in April, and they were treated to an epic contest before Joshua finally stopped the former world heavyweight champion in the 11th round.

There were immediate calls for the two men to meet once again and it now appears as the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas will be the host sight for the contest, with Joshua’s promoter, Hearn, telling Sky Sports News HQ that the heavyweight rematch is likely to take place on November 11.

“I've been in Vegas with AJ, officially applying for my Nevada boxing license to promote there and that went well,” he said.

“I met with the MGM and met with the T-Mobile Arena, Vegas is the front runner and November 11 is the date that is pencilled in. It will probably take a couple of weeks to get everything over the line, but I believe Klitschko will take this fight and believe Vegas will be the one.

“AJ has been over there for about 10 days and has enjoyed himself and got to know the area a little bit. The amount of British fight fans that would travel there, it will be a momentous occasion and one that we will savour for a long time so fingers crossed it's a party in Las Vegas on November 11.”

Joshua is the 2/7 favourite for the rematch with bookmaker bet365, with Klitschko an 11/4 underdog.
