Understanding the rules of blackjack

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games in the world with a host of betting strategies and techniques that can help you win a heap of money. However, if you aren't able to master the fundamental aspects of the game then you could find yourself falling at the first hurdle.

Fortunately, we're here to help which is why we've put together a complete overview of the rules of blackjack. Using this information you should enable you to feel comfortable at the table and confident enough to tackle some of our more advanced blackjack strategies.

Blackjack's Basic Premise
The main structure of blackjack is as follows: A player is dealt a hand (consisting of two cards face up) as is a dealer (one card face up and one face down). The aim of the game for the player is to get closer to 21 than the dealer with going over this total (known as "going bust").

The Player:
In order to make a strong total you have two options during a hand: stand or hit. If you choose to stand then you are signalling that you’re happy with your total and don’t want any more cards. If you choose to hit then the dealer will give you another card and once again offer you the chance to stand or hit. A player is allowed to stand or hit on any total.

The Dealer:
Like the player, the dealer (a member of the casino’s staff) has the option to either stand or hit. However, unlike the player, the dealer is bound by certain conditions. During a hand the dealer must always hit until they have a total of 17 or more. Additionally, once the dealer has a total of 17+ they must stand.

Whether you’re playing mobile blackjack at an online casino or in a live setting, the betting options available to you are always the same. At the start of any hand you’ll have to place a bet (equal to or greater than the minimum) before you’re dealt any cards.

On top of this you’ll find that at certain points in the game you’re able to “double down” or “split”. Each of these options requires you to match your initial bet in order to receive another card from the deck.

Doubling Down: If you have a starting total of 11 or less, then you can match your initial bet and receive one more card. The aim of this move is to get more money onto the table when you’re in an advantageous position.

Splitting: If you’re dealt two cards of the same value you can split them by matching your opening wager. For example, if you are dealt a pair of tens, you can turn them into two separate hands and continue battling the dealer as before.

One of the best ways to beat mobile blackjack is to employ a technique known as card counting. By using a system of addition and subtraction you can track the dynamics of the deck and ascertain when it’s in your favour and when it’s in the dealer’s favour. Beyond this, it’s always wise to focus on the dealer’s up card. Establishing whether their card is weak or strong can help guide whether you hit or stand.

Piecing it all Together
As you can see, blackjack is a relatively simple game at its core but once you start to peel back its many layers you'll find there are a range of techniques you can use to increase your chances of success. Our aim is to not only give you the fundamental knowledge you need to enjoy the game, but show you the best blackjack betting strategies you can use to make a healthy long-term profit.
