Online Slots player wins £189,110 Progressive Jackpot but is Denied Payout due to Game 'Malfunction'

Neil Roarty 14 Aug 2017

A Betfair customer thought he had won a jackpot of £189,110 playing Cop The Lot slots only for the bookmaker to refuse to pay out due to an error in the game's system, which allowed him to enter the progressive jackpot despite not playing for the appropriate stakes.

Every online casino players dream is to scoop a six figure jackpot on Progressive Slots and 31-year-old Eoin O'Shea thought he had done just that when landing £189,100 on Betfair's Cop The Lot game.

However, Mr. O'Shea was left sickened when Betfair refused to pay out his win due to an error with the game. Mr O'Shea should have been ineligible to play for the progressive jackpot that he had been awarded by the game.

Cop The Lot players can win the progressive jackpot when revealing five jackpot gold bars and this is what appeared for Mr. O'Shea. However, after being told that he had won the full £189,100, and that the money would be in his account within 24 hours, Betfair refused to credit the funds as they said Mr. O'Shea's stakes of 20p per spin were not the minimum £1 per spin required to enter the progressive jackpot.

The joiner from Merseyside told The Sun: “I couldn’t believe it. I was absolutely gobsmacked and delighted as it was a huge amount of money.

“My wife, Stephanie, and I have just bought a house and so I thought we would be able to pay off our mortgage.”

Betfair have removed the game from their site and offered to pay Mr. O'Shea £5,000 as a goodwill gesture. He was understandably not happy with this outcome:

“It’s a total disgrace. Thousands of people will play that game hoping to win the jackpot. I bet they don’t know that you can’t win it unless you opt for £1 a spin.

“The game is a total swindle. Betfair say the terms are available on their website but they must be in tiny print because they do not make it clear to punters at all.

“Betfair said the jackpot symbol telling me I had won £189,110 should not have come up but that’s not my fault.”

Mr. O'Shea's solicitor Mark Montaldo took the case to the Independent Betting Adjudication Service (IBAS), who criticised Betfair but upheld their decision, saying that the £5,000 offered was, in fact, generous under the circumstances. IBAS's statement read:

“The customer achieved Gold Bar symbols on each of the five reels, which would ordinarily activate the progressive jackpot.

"However, the customer was playing the game for only 20p a spin whereas the minimum stake requirement to qualify for the progressive jackpot is £1 per spin."

Mr Montaldo was, however, not happy with this decision and feels that his client has been robbed of a life changing win. He added:

“Eoin O’Shea was clearly told he’d won the Jackpot and then Betfair said there had been a mistake. This is unacceptable and is clearly a case of Betfair not playing fair. How many other customers are deprived of legitimate winnings because the gaming company decides it doesn’t want to pay?”

Mr. O'Shea's case notwithstanding, here are some free spins with no deposit required from trusted casinos:
