While UFC superstar Conor McGregor has not stepped foot inside in the Octagon this year, he has enjoyed one big victory in the form of a winning Grand National bet that landed him £17,000.

The Irishman’s exploits in the world of gambling may not match the level of his August 26 opponent, Floyd Mayweather, but he certainly left bookmakers counting the cost of taking him on at the 2017 Grand National.

McGregor turned plenty of heads when he rocked up at Aintree in a £200,000 white Rolls Royce back in April, and his interesting choice of attire – flipped open sunglasses and an unbuttoned shirt – received plenty of attention.

But that was not all that grabbed the headlines – McGregor also put himself in newspapers and magazines by bagging a winning bet on one of the biggest races on the horse-racing calendar.

The 28-year-old Irishman’s £34,000 each-way bet on favourite Blaklion came up trumps despite Derek Fox being unable to ride it to victory.

One For Arthur won the race, but Blacklion’s fourth-placed finish secured a £17,000 windfall for McGregor because the first five places were paying out.

“While Blaklion didn’t win, he still walked away well ahead,” a source close to the UFC lightweight champion told the Irish Daily Sun. “Just goes to show, money follows money.”

McGregor will now place the biggest bet of his career on August 26 – but it will not be with a bookmaker.

The only man to hold two UFC titles at the same time will now look to become the first man to beat Floyd Mayweather in a huge boxing match that will take place in Las Vegas.

Bettingpro.com will have all of the latest betting news and odds during the build-up to the mega-money fight and you can also get our free Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor betting tips.
