Bashing the bookies: Bettingpro looks back at 5 of the biggest betting wins of 2018

Leigh Copson 14 Dec 2018

The team love nothing more than to hear about big betting wins, and as 2018 comes to a close we have been looking back at the year to pick out five of our favourite winning bets that have helped punters across the UK & Ireland bash the bookies!

July 5: Paddy Power punter bashes bookie with €210,000 Kempton winner

One lucky Paddy Power customer is celebrating a €210,000 windfall after a successful evening betting on the Kempton horse racing.

The unnamed customer was feeling the heat yesterday evening when the final leg of their bet came right down to the wire, but ultimately it rained cold hard cash for the Paddy Power punter who managed to burn Irish bookmaker for a six-figure payout.

Their first selection, Age of Wisdom, won by a neck, then Epic Challenge faced no such thing when it was proved an easy winner. Faadhel beat his challengers by a nostril hair, and Moon Song by a neck in the final two legs of the bet.

The individual doubled up on their luck by placing two different types of bet, on the same four horses, netting themselves a cool under €210,000.

The shop customer placed a €3 euro each way Lucky 15 bet (a combination of 15 different bets – 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and one fourfold accumulator in which one or more selection must be successful to have a return) and a €5 each way accumulator (all selections must be successful), staking a total of €100 (the €3 Each Way Lucky 15 cost €90, and €5 Each Way acca cost €10) on their four chosen horses to win at Kempton.

“This punter was on fire last night and in the space of an hour and a half, their blood pressure rose almost as fast as the temperature gauge in our shop,” a spokesperson for Paddy Power told

“But they walked out with a cool €210,000 after giving us a roasting!”

April 5: Bet of the Year? Tennis punter turns £5 into £186,000 with stunning 15p accumulator bets

A Ladbrokes punter has turned £5 into just over £186,000 thanks to a monster tennis acca that ranks as one of the best bets of 2018.

The customer, who wishes to remain anonymous, placed a £2.30 18-fold and 18 x 15p 17-folds totalling to £5 on Tuesday, all of which came in to the sum of £186,574.91.

“This will go down as one of the biggest tennis bets we've seen in recent years,” Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati told

“Having correctly predicted the outcome of 18 matches, seven of which were odds against, we can do little but take our hat off to this plucky punter.”

January 18: Coral punter turns £1 into £135,000 with fantastic horse racing five-fold

One lucky punter from Buckinghamshire was cracking open the champagne on Tuesday afternoon, after he won a staggering £135,000 from a measly £1 accumulator.

The 41-year-old, who wanted to remain anonymous, placed 50p each-way on six horses running at Hereford and Kempton on Tuesday, with their odds ranging between 12/1 and 20/1. One of his selections was declared a non-runner, but the other five went on to win their respective races, handing the elated gambler a huge jackpot of £135,349!

Royale Zanzibar, Clondaw Rigger and Cougar Kid got the ball rolling at Hereford, winning with starting prices of 12/1, 7/1 and 12/1 again. When 10/1 shot Mercers won the opener under the floodlights at Kempton, the punter had to endure a nail-biting wait to see if 15/2 shot General Brook could do the business just after 7.00pm, which he duly did.

The wait, as it turns out, wasn’t nearly as tense as you would expect. The lucky winner decided not to check the results until all his races had run and he almost collapsed with shock when he logged into his Coral account.

"I like to place a small accumulator on the racing on a regular basis as it gives me an interest throughout the afternoon for just a small stake," he told Coral yesterday afternoon.

"On this occasion I didn't actually check back until the races were run though, and when I saw the amount in my account I did a double-take! I even logged out and back in again, just to check it was real."

Coral spokesman David Stevens said: "We are delighted to be paying out this life-changing sum to a regular Coral customer, someone who bets for fun and proves you don't have to stake big money to win big money.”

"At the prices taken, the bet would have paid £63,913, however with the best odds guaranteed on two of the selections, it's actually paid an extra £71,436."

While some punters spend hours studying form and watching every race possible, once again, some of the biggest wins come from gamblers who simply follow their instincts. The triumphant punter went on to explain how he picked the winning horses and what he planned to do with his staggering windfall.

"I picked the horses based on a mixture of the odds on offer, and some names I was familiar with, but I have to say there was nothing too scientific about it, so I hope my win gives hope to all those punters out there who bet for fun like I do."

"My previous biggest win before now was around £500-£600, so this is on a different level, and will help me buy my own house, so it's properly life-changing."

May 10: Huddersfield help lucky Ladbrokes punter turn £100 into £110,000 with midweek ACCA

One lucky punter gave bookmaker Ladbrokes a beating on Wednesday night as they turned a £100 midweek football accumulator into over £110,000.

The customer, who wishes to remain anonymous, placed a seven-fold accumulator at the Ladbrokes website that featured some surprising results, including Kilmarnock to draw at Celtic, Huddersfield Town to draw at Chelsea and Leicester City to beat Arsenal.

And those brave selections came up trumps as Killie and Huddersfield both picked up a point on their travels, while Leicester took advantage of Arsenal’s away-day struggles to win their final home outing of the season, and that left the punter celebrating a £110,737.76 windfall at the end of the night.

“What an end to the season this punter has had,” Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati told

“The stake was high but it all proved to be worthwhile in the end as no late drama was necessary for the monster bet to land.”

August 21: Ladbrokes customer turns £10 accumulator into massive £90k win

Ladbrokes customer was able to turn £10 in a massive £90k win with a monster accumulator stretching over two weeks and seven football competitions.

Monday night saw the customer needing Atalanta to pick up three points against Frosinone, and this aided the 19 game prediction across Europe to come through, with £10 turned into an incredible £90,103.42.

However, the bet could have been over far sooner with a much-less positive outcome. The customer needed a 93rd minute Aberdeen goal against Rangers to get the accumulator up and running on August 5.

Clearly, the customer was not going to have it easy, with another last minute goal for Juventus against Chievo on Sunday seeing the accumulator continue to rumble on.

"What a start to the new campaign for this punter, who has Bruce Anderson and Federico Bernardeschi to thank for our biggest win of the season so far!” Alex Apati of Ladbrokes told
