Leigh Copson: Back Rangers to beat Livingston & under 3.5 total goals @ 21/20 Ladbrokes

Rangers have undoubtedly improved since Steven Gerrard took the reins at Ibrox, but he was unable to lead the team to a trophy during his rookie season as manager and that means the Glasgow giants’ major trophy drought now stands at over eight years. To make matters worse bitter rivals Celtic have swept all before them in recent years, completing an historic ‘treble treble’, so Rangers are under a huge amount of pressure to finally add to the trophy room during the 2019/20 campaign and they are now just three wins away from doing it via the League Cup.
Rangers mastered tricky conditions to see off lower league East Fife in the previous round and they are now heading back out onto the road in the quarter-finals, with Livingston all that is standing between the Light Blues and a semi-final trip to Hampden Park on the first weekend of November. Can they overcome Livi and move within one victory of an appearance in the final, or will there be more cup misery for a Rangers team who failed to make either domestic cup final last season?

Hosts Livingston have benefited from favourable draws to help them make it this far in the competition and they were downed 3-1 at Ibrox less than a fortnight ago, but it would be foolish to simply look at that and write them off here because they have repeatedly proven to be a tough nut to crack on their own (fake) turf. While they were beaten 3-0 when they hosted Rangers back in January, they had won each of their previous home meetings with the Gers and were unbeaten in four when hosting the blue half of Glasgow. That track record will almost certainly give them confidence that they can pull off a shock result here, but I do not fancy their chances.

Rangers should get the job done in 90 minutes, but it will not be a walk in the park for them. Gerrard is likely to make several changes to his starting XI as he continues to deal with a hectic schedule brought on by his team’s participation in the Europa League, and one of those big changes will probably see him drop Alfredo Morelos from the starting XI. The Colombian striker has been in outstanding form so far this season but at some point he will need a rest and although Jermain Defoe is certainly a worthy replacement, he is a very different player to Morelos. While ‘El Buffalo’ creates openings for himself with his physicality, Defoe needs service and that difference between the two men can really hinder Rangers against teams who sit back, park the bus and deny their opponents space.

That is exactly what Livingston will do here. They are going to go ultra-negative in the hope that they can stay in the game and somehow catch Rangers out on the break, and that means the visitors are going to have to show a lot of patience as they try to break down a defence that do not tend to get run over at home. Gerrard’s men will eventually find a breakthrough and go on to win the game, but they will not run riot. Under 3.5 total goals has been a winning bet on 14 of the previous 17 meetings between the two clubs and in three of the four encounters since Gerrard became Rangers boss. It would play a part in a winning bet again on Wednesday night.
