Leigh Copson: Back Genk +3 vs. Liverpool & under 3.5 total goals @ EVS Paddy Power

Liverpool’s flawless start to their domestic campaign was brought to a halt by bitter rivals Manchester United this past weekend. The Reds had opened up a commanding eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League by winning each of their first eight fixtures, but they had to come from behind to earn a point at Old Trafford on Sunday, drawing 1-1. Nobody at Anfield will be panicking about those dropped points however, and that stalemate at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ did extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to six games. Can they now make it seven games without loss when they resume their defence of the Champions League crown on Wednesday night?

Liverpool’s first couple of outings have not exactly gone smoothly. A disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Napoli on opening night extended what has been an underwhelming run of form on foreign soil in recent years, despite that Champions League Final success back in June. The Reds did bounce back a fortnight later with a win over Red Bull Salzburg, but they did go dangerously close to embarrassing themselves in front of the Kop. Jurgen Klopp’s men appeared to be cruising to victory when they stormed to a 3-0 lead in just 36 minutes, and although Salzburg did pull one back before the break it still looking like being a routine win for the Reds. The visitors had other ideas and by the hour mark they were back on level terms thanks to two goals in the space of four minutes, but Mohamed Salah popped up to spare Liverpool’s blushes with little over 20 minutes to go, firing in what proved to be the winner.

The reigning European champions will be hoping to avoid similar drama when they head to Belgium for Matchday Three, but home side Genk have shown they should not be taken lightly. They made a miserable start to the group stage as the they slumped to a 6-2 defeat in Salzburg on Matchday One, but their response was somewhat impressive as they were able to hold Italian giants Napoli to a goalless draw a couple of weeks later. Genk rode their luck in that one as the visitors struck the frame of the goal three times, but the Belgian outfit had chances of their own after the break so it was hardly a miraculous, undeserved result. The question is can they follow that up with another big showing here to deny Liverpool all of the spoils?

The bookmakers have made the visitors clear odds-on favourites for this fixture and that will come as a shock to nobody, but I do have my concerns about backing Liverpool here. After all, as I wrote previously their away form in Europe has been underwhelming. They may have lifted the Champions League Trophy in Madrid back in June, but that was one of just three wins they managed on the road during their campaign and in the group stage they were beaten in all three away fixtures, including a 2-0 loss at Red Star Belgrade. Are Liverpool the better team? Yes. Should they win this match? Yes. Can I ignore last season’s away form in Europe? No, especially when you consider that this fixture is coming between two massive domestic matches against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, with a League Cup clash with Arsenal also on the horizon.

So what do I recommend backing? I am combining a couple of markets using Paddy Power’s Same Game Multi feature for this one – Genk +3 and under 3.5 total goals. If Liverpool do win this match they will not run away with it and if the Belgians can ensure this is a low-scoring encounter, which they showed they are capable of doing against Napoli, then that +3 handicap should be more than enough to ensure that this bet is a winner and double your money.
