Leigh Copson: Back Derby County -1 to beat Scunthorpe United @ 21/10 bet365
* Odds correct at 08:50 BST on 12/8/2019

Derby County have not made the rest of the Championship sit up and take notice during their first two games of the season, but after a traumatic couple of months for the club they will probably be content with the start that they have had.

The Rams suffered play-off final heartache back in May as they missed out on promotion to the Premier League, and several weeks later they lost the services of manager Frank Lampard to Chelsea. County clearly had a contingency plan in place as they quickly appointed former PSV Eindhoven boss Phillip Cocu, and the Dutchman has made a decent start to his reign by following up an opening-night win at Huddersfield Town with a goalless draw at home to Swansea City. Now he will turn his attention to the League Cup and a trip to face basement boys Scunthorpe United in the first round.

The last 18 months or so have been miserable for the Iron, who have gone from League One promotion hopefuls to propping up League Two. This spectacular slump pretty much dates back to the moment that chairman Peter Swann made the controversial decision to sack Graham Alexander despite the ex-defender having the team in the League One play-off places for the second season running. Nick Daws and Stuart McCall both got the boot last season as Scunthorpe suffered relegation to League Two and new boss Paul Hurst has failed to stop the rot during the first few weeks of the season, seeing his side lose 2-0 at home to Swindon Town before being hammered 4-1 at Cheltenham Town this past weekend.

So can we really expect an upset here? Cocu, like many managers, will probably be tempted to rest some of his star names in this competition, but right now you would fancy the chances of a ‘weakened’ Rams team comfortably dispatching a Scunthorpe side that have picked up from where they left off last season, losing matches and conceding plenty of goals. Therefore backing Derby to overcome a one-goal handicap on their way to victory here has bags of appeal.
