Leigh Copson: Back Christian McCaffrey to score 2 or more touchdowns during Tampa Bay at Carolina @ 15/8 Paddy Power

The Carolina Panthers’ season began with a home loss on Sunday, but there is no shame in a three-point defeat to a Los Angeles Rams team who lost in last season’s Super Bowl and are fancied to go one better and win it all this time around. The Panthers went down swinging too. Carolina out-scored Los Angeles 24-17 over the final two quarters of the game, but ultimately they paid the price for a slow start that saw then trail 13-3 at the interval. So nobody will be pressing the ‘panic button’ just yet, but that opening day ‘L’ means there is a degree of pressure on the Panthers to get off the mark when they return to action on Thursday night.

Providing the opposition are a Tampa Bay team who are also 0-1 after Week 1.The Buccaneers did hold a 7-6 lead in San Francisco heading into halftime last Sunday night, but they quite literally threw it away after the break as quarterback Jameis Winston tossed a couple of pick sixes, one to Richard Sherman and one to Akhello Witherspoon, to hand the 49ers a 31-17 victory. They now head out on the road once again for their second outing of the season, but can they tame the Panthers in Carolina or will the home side get their first win on the board at the second time of asking?

The evidence from Week 1 suggests it will be Carolina getting the ‘W’, but for the purpose of my bet I am not focusing on the winner of the game. Instead I am looking at the touchdown markets and I am looking at a man who has picked up from where he left off last season – Carolina running back Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey had a breakout year in 2018 as he racked up almost 2,000 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns, becoming a key figure in the Panthers’ offense, and on opening weekend he was a constant thorn in the Rams’ side, rushing for 128 yards and a couple of touchdowns off 19 carries, while also averaging just over eight yards per catch as he hauled in 10 of the 11 pass attempts sent his way. So when I look at potential scorers here there is no way I can look past McCaffrey, and his history against the Bucs only increases my confidence. In 2018 he racked up 318 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in his two meetings with Tampa Bay, and I expect to see more of the same here.
