Leigh Copson: Back Porto to beat Rangers & both teams to score @ 21/10 bet365
* Odds correct at 10:40 BST on 21/10/2019

Rangers’ stay at the top of the Scottish Premiership proved to be a brief one as they surrendered it back to Celtic in the first round of games after the latest international break. Steven Gerrard’s men had capitalised on a couple of slip-ups by the Hoops to storm to the summit, but a poor performance in a 1-1 draw at Hearts on Sunday knocked them off their perch and they will now look to bounce back by perhaps hitting tip spot in their Europa League group on Thursday night.

Group G is perfectly poised with Rangers, Feyenoord, Porto and Young Boys all locked on three points after two rounds of fixtures, but the Glasgow giants will be kicking themselves that they are not top of the tree heading into Matchday Three. Having opened with a well-deserved 1-0 win over current group leaders Feyenoord on opening night, they were on the brink of following that up with an excellent point away to Young Boys as they entered added time on level terms at 1-1. However, a James Tavernier defensive howler gifted the hosts the opportunity to snatch and 93rd-minute winner and Christian Fassnacht to hand the Swiss outfit their first victory of this group stage.

Rangers did bounce back days later by thrashing Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Premiership, but another Tavernier blunder handed Hearts a share of the spoils this weekend and prevented the Ibrox outfit from building up some momentum heading into this big trip to Portugal to face Porto, who are also looking to get back on track after a Matchday Two defeat.

Sergio Conceicao’s side kicked off their group campaign with a 2-1 win over Young Boys in mid-September, only to slump to a 2-0 defeat when they visited Feyenoord last time out, but I fancy the chances of them getting back on track with what could prove to be a vital win over Rangers. Porto do, after all, boast a strong home record in Europe with only the cream of the crop managing to win at the Estadio Do Dragao in recent years. Rangers certainly do not fit into that category and after a couple of underwhelming outings and results over the past few weeks, capped off by those Tavernier howlers, it is difficult to see them returning to Scotland with a point or three.

They may give the travelling supporters something to cheer though – Alfredo Morelos has been in outstanding form so far this season and already has nine Europa League goals to his name. The Colombian should cause all sorts of problems for the Porto defence on Thursday night and he could well reach double figures by hitting the back of the net, but ultimately his efforts will prove to be in vain as the hosts claim the spoils.
