Leigh Copson: Back St Mirren Draw No Bet vs. Dundee United @ 6/4 William Hill

St Mirren left it too late to preserve their Scottish Premiership status and avoid a relegation play-off. The Buddies embarked on a six-match unbeaten run to complete their league campaign and a 2-0 victory over Hamilton Academical meant they went into the final weekend still in with a shot at climbing out of the bottom two. They simply had to win at Dundee and hope that Hamilton came up short against St Johnstone, but while St Mirren did their half of the deal by scoring three second-half goals in a 3-2, it proved to be in vain because Hamilton won their season finale 2-0.

That means St Mirren now face a two-legged relegation play-off with Championship side Dundee United. Robbie Neilson’s side are looking to replace neighbours Dundee in the top flight next season and they took another step towards promotion with a convincing aggregate win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle. United followed up a 1-0 win at Caley with a 3-0 victory on their own patch, but can they now draw first blood in this important showdown with St Mirren? I doubt it.

Winning at home will be vital for United, but they have produced some very poor results over the course of the campaign, with a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Ross County and a 5-0 battering against Ayr United immediately springing to mind. Their record over the course of the season is hardly stellar either – they won slightly more than half of their league games, they were not particularly prolific in front of goal and they were not hard to breach at the back at times.

So while St Mirren’s league record was hardly impressive, they were playing at a higher level and they do go into this play-off in good shape thanks to a six-match unbeaten run, with four of those positive outings coming away from home. I do fancy them to leave Dundee with a victory for the second time in less than a week, but I am wary that they have drawn three times during this unbeaten sequence so I am going Draw No Bet for a spot of insurance.
