Leigh Copson: Back Portsmouth to beat Sunderland @ 5/4 William Hill

A trip to Wembley Stadium for the second time this season is up for grabs at Fratton Park when Portsmouth entertain Sunderland in the second leg of their League One play-off. So will the Black Cats complete job after running out 1-0 winners in the first leg at the Stadium of Light at the weekend, or can Pompey turn things around and ensure that it is them heading to the home of English football at the end of the month?

This is the fifth time that these two clubs have gone head-to-head this season, with their previous four meetings providing mixed results. Sunderland’s 1-0 success at the weekend, courtesy of a superb Chris Maguire volley, was the first time that they had managed to get the better of the South Coast club this season. Prior to that Portsmouth had won 3-1 at Fratton Park, held the Black Cats to a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light and had beaten them on penalties after their EFL Trophy Final clash finished 2-2 after 120 minutes of play.

So as you can see, Pompey have had a slight edge in previous meetings. But this is the play-offs and we have seen many times over the years that anything can happen, so this could be considered a tough one to call. However, I am confident that the home side will be the ones on top when the full-time whistle blows at Fratton Park.

Kenny Jackett’s men stumbled in their final two home outings of the season, but overall their home form over the past several months has been pretty solid and they have not tasted defeat at Fratton Park since early January. Sunderland, meanwhile, have toiled on their travels recently, rarely winning away from home, so even though they did win the first leg it makes me wary of backing them. Portsmouth have already shown that they are more than capable of beating the Black Cats and I am backing them to do it again on Thursday night.
