Leigh Copson: Back England Women to beat Norway Women @ 11/10 Coral

England’s last-16 victory at the Women’s World Cup was certainly a memorable one, but for all of the wrong reasons. The Lionesses cruised to a 3-0 victory over Cameroon, but it was not the performance or the result that claimed all the headlines in the wake of the match.

Instead all of the talk was about Cameroon’s complete meltdown that had to be seen to be believed – on-pitch tantrums, accusations of racism aimed at FIFA, spitting on opposition players, refusing to kick-off after a goal… we saw it all and that was only the first half! Phil Neville did not hold back in voicing his disgust post-match, but he has to put that behind them as England bid to reach the semi-finals.

Next up for the Lionesses are a Norway team who are threatening to turn themselves into something of a dark horse in France. They pushed joint pre-tournaments France all the way in the group stage before falling to a 2-1 defeat, but they did win their other two group games, against Nigeria and Korea, to book their place in the knockout round and they sprang something of an upset in the last-16 when they dumped Australia out of the competition on penalties after going within seven minutes of getting the job done in regulation time.

So as you can see, England cannot afford to sleep on Norway here or it could come back to haunt them. I do not expect to see that happen. The Lionesses have shown a few vulnerabilities here and there, but they showed great mental strength to keep their composure during that 3-0 win over Cameroon and the scoreline would have been even more convincing had they took a host of chances that came their way in the second half.

Norway will prove to be more of a challenge than Cameroon, but ultimately England should have too much quality for them and they should advance to the final four with a victory in 90 minutes.
