Leigh Copson: Back Aberdeen v Rijeka to end in a draw @ 11/5 bet365
* Odds correct at 11:55 BST on 12/8/2019

Will it be a case of ‘same old, same old’ for Aberdeen in the qualifying stages of the 2019/20 Europa League? The Dons have never made it past the third round of qualifying since Derek McInnes took the reins, falling either at this hurdle or before it on five previous occasions, and they face a sizeable task in trying to prevent history from repeating itself here. Two goals in the final 30 minutes of last week’s first leg in Croatia handed Rijeka a 2-0 victory on the night, and that means the Dons have it all to do when the two teams resume this tie at Pittodrie on Thursday night.

Aberdeen hardly go into this match on the back of a morale-boosting result either. Having struck twice in the final 10 minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in their season-opener at home to Hearts, the Dons slumped to a 1-0 defeat when they visited St Mirren at the weekend – their first loss to the Buddies since McInnes was appointed Dons boss six years ago. They did have chances to rescue a result in the second half of that clash, but they failed to take them and you now have to wonder what their mind-set will be going into this European fixture, especially with their backs firmly against the wall.

The bookmakers have made Aberdeen the slight favourites in the match betting for this second leg, and that is understandable because for all of their struggles in European qualifying over the years, the Dons have not lost a Europa League qualifier it Pittodrie since a 3-2 defeat to Real Sociedad back in August 2014.

However, Aberdeen have never managed to turn around a two-legged European tie after losing the first leg and since that loss to the Spaniards six of their home European fixtures have ended in draws – statistics I cannot ignore. They also look set to be without striker Sam Cosgrove due to injury, and we saw at the weekend how ineffective they can be as an attacking threat when he is on the sidelines. His absence will make the Dons’ task much more difficult, and with Rijeka able to sit back and defend a comfortable lead I can see this descending into a dull, low-scoring stalemate that dumps the Dons out of Europe once again.
