Leigh Copson: Back New England Patriots to score over 37.5 points vs. Miami Dolphins @ 8/5 Ladbrokes

The 2019 NFL season is only one week old and already Miami Dolphins fans cannot wait to see the back of it. They hardly came into the new campaign brimming with confidence, but few would have been so pessimistic to predict the smackdown that Baltimore laid down on them in Week 1. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson entered the season with many wondering if he was nothing more than a glorified running back and while he will almost certainly face stiffer tests in the months to come, the Louisville Cardinal took the first step towards silencing his critics by torching the Dolphins secondary for 324 yards, five touchdowns and a perfect passer rating in a 59-10 humiliation of Miami.

So what is the last thing that the Dolphins needed? A meeting with the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Tom Brady & Co. exploded out of the blocks like a gold medal-winning sprinter in Week 1 as they celebrated unfurling their latest Super Bowl banner by blowing out the Pittsburgh Steelers. Brady threw two touchdown passes and Stephen Gostkowski booted in a couple of field goals as New England cruised to a 20-0 halftime lead and although they did let up a little after the break they did pile some more misery on the Steelers by running the score up to 33-3.

Can New England now improve to 2-0 and add to Miami’s problems on Sunday? History suggests this is not the straightforward task that it should be – Brady’s record in the humid heat of Miami leaves a lot to be desired. The Patriots were stunned by that sensational ‘Miami Miracle’ as time expired at the Hard Rock Stadium last season and that loss for New England saw their star quarterback’s record against the Dolphins slip even further into the red. The six-time Super Bowl winner is now just 7-10 in his career when visiting Miami and if you want another statistic he has only lost three times in his career when the Patriots have been double-digit favourites – two of those losses came against, you guessed it, the Dolphins.

As you can see, New England have a knack for tripping up when they head down to Miami, but I am confident that history can be ignored here. The Dolphins were picked apart by Jackson a week ago and if the Ravens quarterback can do that much damage, how much pain do you think arguably the greatest quarterback of all-time could inflict on them? Miami are a mess on offense, a mess on defense and several players reportedly responded to the embarrassing home loss to Baltimore by seeking out trades away from the franchise. All is not well in the Dolphins camp and the 2019 ‘tank’ job appears to be well and truly up and running, so I suggest backing New England to put plenty of points on the board as they gain a measure of revenge for Kenyan Drake’s walk-off score in 2018.
