Leigh Copson: Back Detroit Lions to beat Chicago Bears @ 7/5 William Hill

The Chicago Bears came into the 2019 NFL season as contenders to go all the way and win the Super Bowl this season, but nine weeks into the campaign the only thing that they are in the hunt for is a high pick in the 2020 draft. A dominant defense was able to make up for an impotent offense as the Bears went 3-1 through the first four weeks of the season, but over the past few weeks that unit has not performed at an elite level and the offense has done nothing to pick up the slack. And I mean nothing. Redzone ineptitude handed the Los Angeles Chargers a victory at Soldier Field in week eight and worse was to come in week nine as Mitchell Trubisky & Co. produced the worst half of offense the franchise has seen in 40 years – nine total yards, no points and ONE first down. They bounced back slightly in the second half and did muster a couple of touchdown drives, but in the end they got what they deserved, a 22-14 defeat that leaves them 3-5 for the season and on the brink of bowing out of the postseason race altogether. Chicago have to beat division rivals Detroit on Sunday and of all of the matchups they could have asked for at this time, this would be one of them.

The Lions are ahead of the Bears in the NFC North standings purely because of a week one tie against Arizona that probably felt like a defeat to the Detroit fans who saw their team blow a 17-point lead. They did bounce back and show signs of promise with back-to-back wins over the Chargers and the Eagles to climb to 2-1, but it has pretty much been all downhill from there with just one win coming in their last five games. In fairness to the Lions they have faced some tough games during this run, namely a trip to Green Bay and home games against Kansas City and Minnesota, but it is impossible to ignore how badly they have been gashed on defense, especially against the run, while on the offense a non-existent run-game continues to be a serious issue that really prevents them from finding real balance when in possession of the football. They have also been guilty of being sloppy with the football too, so this has to make them ideal opposition for the blundering Bears at this time. The problem is it is difficult to have any confidence in Chicago taking advantage.

Khalil Mack & Co. should have no issues shutting down the Detroit run game, forcing Matthew Stafford to beat them through the air, and they should do a decent job of slowing down Detroit’s passing game too – at first. Eventually that defense will run out of steam from spending too much time on the field, thank to this pathetic Bears offense, and we all know what happens then. Tiredness will set in, mistakes will happen and we will see the almost inevitable big play or busted coverage that sets up the opposition to score. We have seen it time and time again this season. Detroit will not run riot on the scoreboard, but they will not need to because Chicago have put up more than 16 points on just three occasions so far this season and are seemingly getting worse and worse on offense every week – who knows what depths they will sink too after that 164-yard showing in Philly! With all of this in mind I am stunned that the Bears are odds-on favourites for this important NFC North clash, especially with a 1-3 record at home, so I am all over an ‘upset’ win for Detroit on Sunday.
