Leigh Copson: Back Rangers to beat Kilmarnock @ 5/6 William Hill

The 2018/19 season will be a tale of what might have been for Rangers. A late stumble cost them a place in the knockout stage of the Europa League, a couple of poor performances at exactly the wrong time cost them a shot at domestic silverware, and on the league scene a couple more positive results here and there and it would have been them lifting the trophy in Steven Gerrard’s first season in charge. So while there are some negatives that Gerrard will have to erase this summer, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about what Rangers can offer next season.

But before the Gers can look ahead to 2019/20, there is the small matter of wrapping up their league campaign with a trip to face Kilmarnock on Sunday. And while there is almost nothing of note on the line here, the visitors do have some incentive to leave Rugby Park with all of the spoils.

Kilmarnock have been responsible for some of Rangers more disappointing moments over the course of their campaign. Not only did they deliver a massive blow to the Glasgow giants’ title hopes with a shock 2-1 win in January, they have taken points off Rangers in all three of their previous league meetings with Gerrard’s men this season. That makes them something of a bogey team for the ex-Liverpool and England star and it means they have played a major role in why he is not being crowned a champion at the end of his first season north of the border.

So as you can see, Rangers do have some incentive to win here in the form of revenge, and given their recent form I cannot go against them. Rangers have bounced back from their Old Firm defeat in March by producing a string of fine performances in a six-match win streak, and they go into Sunday’s match full of confidence after sweeping aside Celtic in a 2-0 Old Firm win last weekend. So while Rangers have been guilty of performing poorly out of nowhere, this excellent run gives me the confidence that they can finally beat Kilmarnock in the league this season.

The odds are not huge, but they are solid for a Rangers team that are flying right now. However, if you are looking for a bigger return on this match you should check out our Scottish Premiership betting tips for the weekend. We have a 4/1 tip for Kilmarnock v Rangers.
