Leigh Copson: Back Lewis Hamilton to win the German Grand Prix @ 4/6 William Hill

Lewis Hamilton made it a weekend to remember for British Formula 1 fans as he won his ‘home’ grand prix a fortnight ago. Prior to the race there were fears that it would be the final F1 outing at Silverstone, but just days before the teams got into the nitty-gritty of the meeting it was announced that a new deal had been struck between F1 officials and circuit bosses, and Hamilton capped off a happy week for British F1 supporters by taking the chequered flag for a record-setting sixth time.

It was not a runaway success though. Hamilton needed the help of a safety-car period to overcome the challenge of Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas, but how he got the job done at Silverstone did not matter. What mattered was that he became the most successful driver in the history of the race, claimed his seventh race win of the season and opened up 39-point lead at the top of the standings.

So can anyone stop the British ace from successfully defending his world title and becoming a six-time world champion this season? If anyone can it is probably Mercedes pal Bottas, and the bookmakers clearly believe the Finnish driver has the best chance of denying Hamilton race win number eight on Sunday afternoon.

However, at this time if feels almost impossible to go against the red-hot world championship leader. Hamilton has produced some very impressive victories this season, but even when he has not been on top form he has developed that very welcome knack of getting the job done and that is why he is sitting pretty at the summit. And if current form does not tempt you to back Hamilton, then history suggests you should. He boasts an excellent track record at the Hockenheimring, having won here in each of his two previous visits, so I have to recommend backing Hamilton to make it three-in-a-row at the German circuit on Sunday.
