Leigh Copson: Back Tottenham Hotspur -2 to beat Newcastle United @ 15/8 Paddy Power

Tottenham Hotspur may not boast a 100% record after the first two rounds of fixtures in the top flight, but they have to be very happy about how their Premier League title quest has begun. They came storming back to beat newly-promoted Aston Villa in their season-opener and followed that up with another point last weekend, twice coming from behind to earn at draw at defending champions Manchester City who, not for the first time this year, saw VAR chalk off a late winner against the North London club. So can Tottenham add to their points tally with another home win on Sunday?

Newcastle United are the visitors and the head to the English capital in a pretty sorry state. The summer departure of Rafael Benitez and the underwhelming appointment of Steve Bruce as his successor have only served to heighten the frustration in the stands, and if the ex-Sunderland boss was hoping that he could win over his doubters in the first few weeks he has failed badly in that mission. A home defeat to Arsenal was not exactly a terrible result, but alarm bells will have been ringing in the wake of last weekend’s resounding loss at newly-promoted Norwich City, and the bookmakers have certainly heard them. The Magpies are now the bookies’ favourites for the drop.

So can Newcastle breathe some life into their season or will Spurs maintain their unbeaten record to pile on the misery? There is very little evidence to suggest the former will happen! Newcastle did the double over Spurs in 2015/16, denying Mauricio Pochettino’s side a second-place finish with a 5-1 rout on the final day, but Tottenham avenged that loss when they two teams met on the opening day of the following campaign and that victory proved to be the start of a four-match win streak for Spurs against the North East outfit. So as you can see, both history and current form are on the side of the hosts here – the question is how do we back the clear favourites?

For me the most appealing option is backing Spurs to overcome a two-goal handicap on their way to victory. It has been almost five years since Tottenham -2 was a winning bet on this fixture, but the goals have been flowing for Pochettino’s men during the first few weeks of the season, while that Newcastle defence let in three against Norwich as they failed to contain Teemu Pukki. If the Canaries can do that sort of damage then Harry Kane & Co. must be licking their lips at the prospect of taking on toothless Toon on Sunday. This could turn out to be a very comfortable victory for Tottenham.
