Leigh Copson: Back Rafael dos Anjos to beat Kevin Lee via KO/TKO or Decision @ 13/10 Paddy Power

Kevin Lee has finally given up on trying to make the UFC lightweight division’s 155lb weight limit, and he will make his eagerly-awaited debut in the welterweight ranks when he takes on another man who has made the jump up in weight class, Rafael dos Anjos.

Dos Anjos reigned over the lightweight division between March 2015 and July 2016, but after suffering back-to-back defeats in 2016, against Eddie Alvarez and Tony Ferguson, the 34-year-old opted to move up to the 170lb ranks in an attempt to breathe new life into his career. It was a decision that paid off as he stormed into title contention with a run of three consecutive wins, including one over former champion Robbie Lawler, but his momentum stalled in 2018 with back-to-back decision defeats to Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman, and if dos Anjos loses here it really will send him back to the drawing board.

The same could be said for Lee though. ‘The Motown Phenom’ put himself in the title picture with a run of five straight wins between April 2016 and June 2017, but he was submitted inside three rounds by Tony Ferguson when he fought for the interim belt and then failed to make weight when he returned to action against Edson Barboza. Lee did win that bout by stoppage, but it was clear that his days at 155lbs were over and it was no real surprise when it was confirmed that Lee would move up to 170lbs for his next UFC outing.

Lee should be invigorated by not having to put his body through a demanding weight cut, but I am not sold on him enjoying a winning debut in his new division. Lee relies heavily on his wrestling to win fights and while wrestlers have had success against dos Anjos recently, both Covington and Usman are considerably bigger men than Lee. They were able to physically impose themselves on those fights, with Usman forcing him backwards with the jab and Covington constantly pressing forward, but Lee will not be able to do that.

I expect dos Anjos to use his high-volume striking to control how the contest plays out and make it difficult for Lee to get the fight to the mat. And if the fight stays standing, ‘The Motown Phenom’ is in trouble because he is nowhere near the striker his opponent is. This is dos Anjos’ fight to lose despite the bookies making Lee the favourite, and while I do expect this fight to go the distance, I would not be shocked to see the Brazilian force a late stoppage with strikes.
