Leigh Copson: Back Josh Warrington to beat Kid Galahad by Unanimous Decision @ 11/8 Ladbrokes

Josh Warrington recorded the biggest win of his career as he crossed the Pennines to successfully defend his IBF featherweight title against Carl Frampton in Manchester last December, but for his latest defence the 28-year-old Yorkshireman is back on home ground and he will be looking to put on a show when he puts his belt on the line against domestic rival Kid Galahad at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

Qatar-born Galahad, who fights out of Sheffield, has forced his way into the world featherweight title picture by compiling a perfect 26-0 record since turning professional almost a decade ago, and his six stoppage wins in his last eight fights suggest he does offer the punching power that could perhaps trouble and dethrone Warrington on Saturday.

The big question is can Galahad cope with the relentless pressure that the champion will put on him from the opening bell? Warrington sets a blistering pace, does not take a backwards step and mixes his attacks between head and body to wear down his opponent. That approach has reaped rewards throughout his career and proved to be fruitful in the two fights that have helped cement his status as the number one featherweight on the planet – the decision win over Frampton and, before that, the decision win over Lee Selby. I believe this approach is likely to serve him well once again here.

I expect Warrington to successfully defend his title and hand Galahad a first defeat, but the odds on him doing that are hardly appealing and that means looking at how the champion will retain his crown. Warrington’s last stoppage win came almost two years again when he halted Dennis Ceylan in the 10th round, and that was only the sixth stoppage win of his career. When it comes to the IBF title-holder it is a case of workrate over punching power, so backing him for a Unanimous Decision victory is the way to go here, especially with this fight taking place in his home town.
