Leigh Copson: Back David Allen to beat David Price in Rounds 1-6 @ 5/4 Coral

Saturday night sees two more British heavyweights go head-to-head, with David Allen and David Price going head-to-head on the undercard of Dillian Whyte’s clash with Oscar Rivas as the o2 Arena in London. The winner will move a step closer to possibly challenging new British champion Daniel Dubois, while the loser could find themselves having to deal with a career-ending loss. So who takes it?

Price made his professional debut a decade ago and big things were expected of the giant Liverpudlian, with many proclaiming him the next big heavyweight star in British boxing. He looked like living up to that billing when he embarked on a 15-fight win streak that included an impressive 73-second knockout of John McDermott. However, his stock nose-dived in 2013 when he suffered shock TKO defeats at the hands of Tony Thompson, and it never truly recovered as he developed a reputation for having a week chin. Price has been stopped several more times since then, leading to calls for him to retire, but he soldiers on and he will be desperate to put himself in the British heavyweight title picture with a victory here.

His opponent, Dave Allen, is another man who has become something of a journeyman in the heavyweight division, compiling a 17-4-2 record since turning professional almost seven years ago. He does have a couple of big-name defeats on his record having previously lost to Dillian Whyte and Luis Ortiz, but he goes into this bout on the back of an impressive three-round stoppage of Lucas Browne back in April and with a 61% knockout percentage he will almost certainly fancy his chances of testing Price’s questionable chin.

I like his chances too. Allen is available at backable odds for a KO/TKO, but I am looking for a price that is a little bigger in this fight and that is why I am backing him to win in the first six rounds. All but one of Price’s six stoppage losses (including the bout with Erkan Teper that was turned to a No Contest) have come inside the first six rounds, and all it will take is for Allen to land one big shot that scramble his opponent’s senses and bring the fight to a close.
