Leigh Copson: Back David Montgomery to score a touchdown anytime during Chicago at Washington @ 7/5 Paddy Power

To say the Chicago Bears bombed on opening night of their 100th season would be a gigantic understatement. They were expected to be too much for the Green Bay Packers and although that dominant defense was able to shut down Aaron Rodgers for virtually an entire game, a pathetic offensive showing cost them dear as they lost to their bitter rivals at Soldier Field. Head coach Matt Nagy was blasted for completely abandoning the run game and going away from rookie running back David Montgomery in the loss, and that meant the pressure was on the second-year coach to show more balance in his playcalling when Chicago visited Denver in week two. He did just that.

The Bears racked up 153 yards on the ground as they fought back to snatch an improbably victory as time expired at Mile High, and it was Montgomery who led the charge as he battled his way to 62 yards off 18 carries. Those statistics may not jump straight off the page, but against a tough defense the NFL newcomer showed glimpses of what could come during his time in the ‘Windy City’, showing great poise and patience in the backfield while executing cuts and spins that helped him move the Bears forward. Montgomery also delivered the team’s first touchdown of the season as he evoked memories of the late, great Walter Payton by diving over the defense to score, but can he follow up that strong showing in the Monday night game at Washington?

Make no bones about it, the Bears desperately need to come away with another victory here. They are a game behind Green Bay in the North and they face a string of Super Bowl contenders after the bye week, so games like this one should be considered ‘must-win’ outings for a team who has ambitions of lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy next February. Washington have gone 0-2 through the first two weeks of the season, blowing a 17-0 lead at Philadelphia before falling to Dallas at home, and they have been truly dreadful against the run, coughing up 123 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles before haemorrhaging 213 yards and two touchdowns against the Cowboys.

Montgomery must be licking his lips at the prospect of coming up against this unit and if quarterback Mitchell Trubisky can get the passing game going then not only will the third-round draft pick be a handful on the ground, he could also pose a dual threat out of the backfield by hauling in a few catches too. This is a side of his game we are yet to see in the NFL due to Chicago’s early-season struggles on offense. So as you can see, Montgomery could cause all sorts of problems for the Redskins on Monday night and he has to be considered a leading contender to find the endzone on in what could be another low-scoring matchup involving the Bears.
