Leigh Copson: Back Harrogate Town Draw No Bet vs. Portsmouth @ 10/3 Ladbrokes

The FA Cup over the course of the weekend and there is one final tie to be played – this meeting between former winners Portsmouth and non-league promotion-chasers Harrogate Town. Of course there will have been a few surprises over the course of the weekend, but it could be argued that there is no bigger scalp that can be claimed at this point of the competition than beating a team that lifted this famous trophy just over a decade ago. But can Harrogate record the most famous victory in the club’s history, or will Pompey play up and march on into the second round?

The first few months of the season have been a mixed bag for Portsmouth. They are down in 13th place in the League One table but only five points off the play-off places, while their cup exploits have seen them upset Championship sides Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers in the League Cup and get the better League One high-fliers Oxford United in the EFL Trophy. A couple of those success have come on the road too which should give us confidence that they will fare well here, but those results are countered by a few underwhelming away days like the recent 1-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon, and they have now won only one of their last six away games in 90 minutes.

Therefore Harrogate Town will almost certainly fancy their chances of springing an upset here and they go into the match in good shape thanks to a solid start to the season that has put them in the play-off places in the National League. A big reason for their strong start to the campaign has been their excellent home form. The Sulphurites have won six of their 10 games in front of the home supporters, losing only twice, and they head into this match having won five straight at the CNG Stadium. They have also lost just once in their last 12 competitive fixtures, so confidence in the camp will be sky high right now. But can they ride it to a victory?

This is the FA Cup and upsets do happen, so I am going to take a leap of faith and back Harrogate to pull off a giant-killing here. I had plenty of success in the first round of this competition last season, with a Mansfield Town’s draw at Charlton Athletic landing me a 9/4 winner as I went 4/5 with my predictions, so I have faith that my ability to pick out an upset. However, I am urging a spot of caution and that is why I am going Draw No Bet for a spot of insurance – and ideal option when you consider that Portsmouth have already drawn in 90 minutes seven times this season, while Harrogate have been involved in five stalemates themselves.
