Leigh Copson: Back Scotland Women Draw No Bet vs. Japan Women @ 14/5 Paddy Power

Scotland suffered disappointment in their World Cup opener as they were narrowly beaten by England. Shelley Kerr’s side made a promising start to the match but they lost some steam when they fell behind to a controversial penalty awarded by VAR, and they then suffered another setback when Ellen White doubled England’s lead just before the break. Scotland responded well after the break to pull one back through Claire Emslie, and although they failed to find an equaliser they could take plenty of positives from the match. After all, when these two nations met two years ago the Scots were outclassed in a 6-0 thumping. This time they have the Lionesses plenty to deal with.

However, if they are to progress to the knockout stage of this match they must bounce back from the loss quickly and if they can do it with a win in their second outing they will put one foot in the last-16. It will not be easy though – providing the opposition are Japan.

The Japanese were crowned world champions eight years ago and came into this World Cup as one of the two teams expected to qualify from Group D, with England being the other. They disappointed in their opening fixture though as they were forced to settle for a draw against Argentina, and that result proves this is a winnable fixture for an improving Scotland side.

While the Japanese will be considered the superior team in a technical sense, they do lack a cutting edge up front and out of these two teams it could be argued that it is the Scots who offer more as an attacking threat. They have failed to score in only two of their last 15 international fixtures so if they can get their noses in front here it could be very difficult for Japan to find a way back. I really do believe we could see an upset in this one, but I am going Draw No Bet for a spot of insurance.
