Leigh Copson: Back Everton to beat Aston Villa @ 6/5 William Hill

Aston Villa have found it hard going in their return to the Premier League, losing their first two matches back in the top flight. They stunned Tottenham Hotspur when they took a ninth-minute lead on opening weekend, but they conceded three goals in the final 17 minutes to head home empty-handed and they picked up from where they left off as they conceded twice in the opening 12 minutes en route to a 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth. Dean Smith’s side desperately need to stop the rot and get their first points on the board, but can they do that when Everton pay a visit to Villa Park on Friday night?

While Villa have suffered back-to-back defeats, Everton have made a solid start to take four points from their opening two fixtures. The Toffees overcame the dismissal of Morgan Schneiderlin to claim a point at Crystal Palace in their season-opener, with Jordan Pickford making a couple of important saves to keep the score at 0-0, but their home opener brought much better fortune as an early goal from Bernard set them on their way to a 1-0 victory over Watford. Marco Silva’s side will now make the trip to the Midlands looking to build on that point, and I fancy their chances of doing just that.

Everton were not great travellers last season, winning only five of their 19 games on the road in the Premier League, but there are a couple of factors that make me confident in their chances of registering a rare away win here. That back four in front is already looking very strong and when previous opponents have managed to find a way through it they have been denied by the in-form Pickford.

Villa, meanwhile, cannot boast that same solidity at the back. They have now conceded five goals in just two Premier League fixtures and the manner in which they have been conceding must be worrying for Smith – his side do not just concede once and settle down, they tend to concede in flurries. Three goals in 17 minutes against Spurs and two in 12 minutes against Bournemouth suggest that if they fall behind here they could be in major trouble. This Everton defence is not easily broken down and if they get their noses in front Villa could have a very tough time getting back into the game. Everton are not always a particularly appealing pick when they are on the road, but the early-season form of these two clubs suggests this could be a good away day for the Merseysiders.
