Spain vs Russia Preview

Spain and Russia face off in the bronze medal game of the Eurobasket 2017 at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul on Sunday.

The Spaniards kissed their title-retention bid goodbye after getting a 72-92 beating at the hands of Slovenia in their semifinal duel last Thursday.

Pau Gasol had 16 points while Marc Gasol tallied 12 and 10 boards but they were no match for the Slovenians featuring Goran Dragic, Luka Doncic and Anthony Randolph.

The Gasol brothers will get support from fellow NBA player Ricky Rubio and Sergio Rodriguez as they aim to extend their streak of podium finishes in this competition. Spain last missed out on a medal in 2005 when it placed fourth.

Head coach Sergio Scariolo will also rely on brothers Guillermo and Juancho Hernangomez and veteran Fernando San Emeterio.

Russia, meanwhile, lost to Serbia 79-87 in the semifinals. The loss spoiled the 33-point explosion of Aleksei Shved. The Khimki guard will team up with NBA veteran Timofey Mozgov and CSKA Moscow players Vitaliy Fridzon and Andrey Vorontsevich as they aim to give the Russians a podium finish for the first time since 2011 when they bagged the bronze medal.

Other key players for head coach Sergey Bazarevich are Dmitrii Khvostov and Nikita Kurbanov.

This is the first meeting between Spain and Russia in the Eurobasket since their epic 2007 final duel in Madrid that was won by the Russians 60-59.
