The Roberto Duran Arena is expected to be packed to the rafters when host Panama takes on Mexico in the FIBA Centrobasket semifinal tonight.

The hosts swept Group A of the preliminary round after posting easy wins over Antigua and Barbuda (103-48), Puerto Rico (87-64), Nicaragua (99-60) and Cuba (76-71).

Leading Panama in this highly-anticipated duel are veteran forward Michael Hicks and Tony Bishop. Head coach Joaquin Ruiz will also rely on Edward Jones, Josimar Ayarza and Ernesto Oglivie on the offensive end. Jaime Lloreda is a workhorse underneath the basket while Joel Muñoz will orchestrate the team's offense.

Panama is aiming to reach the Centrobasket final for the first time since 2006 when it defeated the US Virgin Islands at home to win its fourth gold medal in this tournament. Hicks and Lloreda were part of that championship squad with the former scoring 29 points in the final to lead the hosts to a 73-59 victory.

Out to spoil the party in Panama City is Mexico, which placed second in Group B after beating the US Virgin Islands (91-83 OT), Costa Rica (78-46) and the Bahamas (84-81) and losing to the Dominican Republic (69-82).

The prolific trio of Jorge Gutierrez, Francisco Cruz and Hector Hernandez will lead the Mexicans in their title-retention bid.

Gutierrez, who plays for the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA, had a triple-double performance of 20 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against the Bahamas while Hernandez had 24 points including the game-winning three-pointer.

Other key players for head coach Sergio Valdeolmillos are guard Paul Stoll and big men Lorenzo Mata and Adrian Zamora.

The winner of this game will take on the winner of the other semifinal battle between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

Mexico defeated Panama 82-68 in the preliminary round of last year's FIBA Americas Championship with Stoll leading the way with 20 points and seven assists.
