Khimki vs Valencia Preview

Khimki and Valencia take their rivalry to the Euroleague after both teams competed in the EuroCup last season.

Valencia beat Khimki in their best-of-three quarterfinal and went on to win to reach the final where it lost to fellow Spanish club Unicaja Malaga in their own best-of-three series.

Valencia made up for its runner-up finish in the EuroCup by winning the Spanish Liga ACB title after beating Real Madrid in four games in their best-of-five duel. Liga ACB Finals MVP Bojan Dubljevic returns this season along with Rafa Martinez and Fernando San Emeterio. Also back are Will Thomas, Antoine Diot, Guillem Vives and Joan Sastre.

Valencia signed several players in the offseason including Sam Van Rossom, Tibor Pleiss, Erick Green, Latavious Williams and Aaron Doornekamp. The club also has a new head coach in Txus Vidorreta, who has replaced Pedro Martinez.

San Emeterio, Williams and Diot, however, are all questionable after missing their last domestic game against Tenerife.

Reigning EuroCup MVP Alexey Shved is back to lead Khimki along with center Marko Todorovic and forward Sergey Monya. Shved averaged 22.1 points and 5.2 assists in the EuroCup last season.

Khimki also made some changes in the offseason. Head coach Dusko Ivanovic was sacked in June and has been replaced Georgios Bartzokas, who coached Barcelona last season. Also gone are Jacob Pullen, Earl Rowland and Nobel Boungou-Colo.

Among the Russian club's new recruits are Malcolm Thomas, James Anderson, Tyler Honeycutt, Charles Jenkins, Anthony Gill and Stefan Markovic. Honeycutt, who saw action for Anadolu Efes last season, played two seasons with Khimki from 2014 to 2016 and helped the club win the 2015 EuroCup title.

With a full-strength line-up plus homecourt edge, we expect Khimki to carve out a close win over Valencia.
