FIBA World Cup - China to host 2019 FIBA World Cup

The FIBA World Cup is coming to Yao Ming's country in 2019.

FIBA has awarded the hosting rights of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup to China.

The FIBA Central Board chose the Asian giants over the Philippines after the two countries made their final presentations in Tokyo on Friday afternoon.

Among those present in Tokyo to support the country's hosting bid was basketball icon Yao Ming.

It's the first time that China will host the FIBA World Cup.

Established in 1950 as the World Basketball Championship, the quadrennial event was subsequently called FIBA World Championship before being known by its present name starting in 2014. The next World Cup will take place in 2019 after FIBA reset the past cycle to avoid a conflict with the FIFA World Cup. The 2019 edition of the tournament will feature a record 32 teams.
