The French broke the hearts of the fans at the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid Wednesday night after beating host Spain 65-52.

The Spaniards were the overwhelming favorites entering the match with their full-strength line-up and having crushed Les Bleus 64-88 in their Group A showdown last September 3.

However, the French proved that they can still win despite the absence of star playmaker Tony Parker and their other NBA players.

France dictated the tempo early on before the hosts caught up to tie the scores after the first period. The French again took control in the second period and this time they seized a 35-28 lead at the half.

Egged on by their home supporters, the Spaniards rallied in the third period to keep the game close. It was a nip-and-tuck affair early in the fourth period before Les Bleus uncorked a 7-0 run capped by Boris Diaw's three-pointer to take a 51-45 cushion with 6:43 left.

No team scored again until Pau Gasol completed a three-point play with just over four minutes remaining to put the hosts within 48-51.

The two squads exchanged baskets but the Spaniards could only close the gap to three points. Thomas Huertel pushed France's lead to 57-52 after making a lay-up with 1:50 remaining before the Spain-based guard nailed a dagger trey moments later to give France an eight-point cushion. The Spaniards failed to score in their succeeding plays and free throws from Huertel, Mickael Gelabale and Rudy Gobert sealed the monumental upset. France outscored Spain 23-9 in the final 10 minutes of play.

Diaw, who won an NBA title with the San Antonio Spurs last season, topscored with 15 points.

Huertel tallied 13 points and four assists while Gelabale and Nicolas Batum finished with nine points apiece. Gobert collected 13 rebounds while Joffrey Lauvergne had 10 boards as the French outrebounded the Spaniards 50-28. They also had more assists 14-9.

Serbia, meanwhile, had an easier quarterfinal outing as its cruised past Brazil 84-56.

The game was close in the first half before the Balkan powerhouse outscored the South Americans 29-12 in the third period behind the heroics of Miroslav Raduljica, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Milos Teodosic.

Teodosic topscored with 23 points while Bogdanovic had 12 points and six rebounds as the Serbians avenged their 73-81 defeat to the Brazilians in the group stage.

Raduljica and back-up big man Nenad Krstic had 10 points apiece for the Serbians, who won back-to-back world titles in 1998 and 2002 under the old FR Yugoslavia name.

The winner of this game will play either the United States or Lithuania in Sunday's gold medal game while the loser will be relegated to the bronze medal game on Saturday.

This is the second meeting between France and Serbia in the ongoing tournament. The French escaped with a 74-73 win in their Group A showdown at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes de Granada last August 31. Raduljica fouled Lauvergne with the scores tied at 73 with a second remaining. The Partizan Belgrade forward made the first and missed the second to seal the win for the French.
