The United States are the heavy favourites to win the 2019 FIBA World Cup (formerly FIBA World Basketball Championship) to be held in eight venues across China from August 31 to September 15.

The Americans are aiming for a historic third consecutive World Cup title and they can be backed at -715 with bet365 to achieve the feat. Team USA are also the three-time defending Olympic champions.

Head coach Gregg Popovich has yet to announce his final 12-man line-up in the quadrennial meet but several NBA superstars are expected to don the national colours. Among those named in the provisional roster are All-Stars Anthony Davis, James Harden, Damian Lillard, Kemba Walker and Kyle Lowry. Young guns Donovan Mitchell, Kyle Kuzma and Jayson Tatum along with prospective 2019 Rookie Draft top pick Zion Williamson were also invited to take part in the team’s training camp in Las Vegas.

The Americans will feature in Group E along with Turkey, the Czech Republic and Japan. USA Basketball fielded G-League standouts in the qualifiers with former NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy handling the squad. They topped Group E of the qualifiers with a 10-2 record.

Serbia are expected to be the Americans’ biggest threat for the gold medal and the Balkan powerhouse are priced at +1400 with the UK bookmaker to emerge as champions. The Serbians finished runner-up to the Americans in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain and in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. NBA mainstays Nikola Jokic, Nemanja Bjelica, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Boban Marjanovic and Milos Teodosic are expected to lead Aleksandar Djordjevic’s troops in China where they will compete in Group D along with Italy, the Philippines and Angola. Serbia used to be part of the old Yugoslavia teams and last won this tournament in 2002 when they carried the FR Yugoslavia name. The Serbians placed behind Greece and Germany in Group L of the European qualifiers but Jokic did not play a single game while his co-NBA players had limited appearances.

Other teams that are expected to challenge for the gold medal are Spain (+2200) and France (+3300), who placed third in the 2014 World Cup.

The Spaniards will miss the services of injured long-time star Pau Gasol, who led the country to their only World Cup triumph in 2006. Nevertheless, head coach Sergio Scariolo is expected to field a formidable unit in China that will likely include NBA players Marc Gasol, Ricky Rubio and brothers Willy and Juan Hernangomez. Spain will see action in Group C with Iran, Puerto Rico and Tunisia.

NBA mainstays Nicolas Batum, Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert are expected to lead Les Bleus along with Euroleague stars Thomas Heurtel and Nando De Colo. The French will lock horns with Germany, the Dominican Republic and Jordan in Group G.
