Format and Current Teams

The 29th edition of the FIBA Asia Cup (formerly FIBA Asia Championship) will feature Oceania teams Australia and New Zealand for the first time. This is also the first time that the continental tournament will no longer serve as a qualifier for either the FIBA World Cup or the Olympics. The FIBA Asia Cup will also be a quadrennial event starting in this year's edition.

The 2017 FIBA Asia Cup will feature 16 teams that were divided into four groups. Iran, Jordan, India and Syria will feature in Group A while defending champion China, the Philippines, Qatar and Iraq will face off in Group B. In Group C are host Lebanon, South Korea, New Zealand and Kazakhstan while playing in Group D are Australia, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong.

The teams will play their groupmates once with the top finisher advancing directly to the quarterfinals. The second and third placers will slug it out in the playoffs while the bottom-ranked team will be eliminated. The winners in this phase will join the four group winners in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal winners will proceed to the semifinals. The semifinal winners will then face off in the final while the losers will fight for the bronze medal.

History

The FIBA Asia Cup was first played in Manila in 1960 when the tournament was known as the Asian Basketball Confederation Championship. The Philippines enjoyed success in the early editions of the tournament with Japan and South Korea also sharing the spotlight. China won its first Asian title in 1975 and eventually became the most dominant team in the history of this competition with 16 titles.

The late 1990s saw the rise of West Asian teams with Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Qatar, Jordan and Iran giving their East Asian counterparts a run for their money. The Iranians, led by star center Hamed Haddadi, ended China's stronghold in the past decade after winning back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2009 and adding a third in 2013.   The Chinese regained their crown in 2015 after beating the Filipinos in the final in Changsha.
