Only one ticket to the Rio Olympics basketball competition is left and that spot will go to either Canada or France.

The two unbeaten teams advanced to the final of the Philippine leg of the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament after pulling off wins at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City yesterday.

Canada defeated New Zealand 78-72 in the first semifinal while France eliminated continental rival Turkey 75-63.

Leading the Canadians in their quest to book a ticket to the Rio Games are NBA players Cory Joseph and Tristan Thompson. Joseph scored 23 points against the Tall Blacks while Thompson, who helped the Cleveland Cavaliers win their maiden NBA title this past season, had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Italy-based forward Melvin Ejim is another player to watch out for the Canadians, who last played in the Olympics in 2000 when Steve Nash led the squad to a seventh-place finish in Sydney. Head coach Jay Triano will also pin his hopes on NBA mainstays Tyler Ennis and Anthony Bennett.

France also boasts of a powerhouse roster led by NBA All-Star Tony Parker and reigning Euroleague MVP Nando De Colo. Nicolas Batum is also out to impress after finally suiting up against Turkey after missing their first two games. Other key players for head coach Vincent Collet are big men Boris Diaw, Joffrey Lauvergne and Kim Tillie, wingman Mickael Gelabale and guard Thomas Heurtel, who topscored with 17 points against the Turks. France placed sixth at the 2012 London Olympics.

Canada and France last played each other in the group stage of the 2010 FIBA World Championship with Les Bleus pulling off a 68-63 win in Izmir. Batum had 24 points in that game.

The winner of the Pasay City final will join Belgrade leg winner Serbia and Turin leg champion Croatia in the Rio Olympics.
