Brazil and host Venezuela will feature in the gold medal game of the FIBA South American Women's Championship after prevailing over their semifinal opponents at the Domo Bolivariano yesterday.

The Brazilians pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat rival Argentina 73-57 while the Venezuelans held off a late comeback from Colombia to pull off a 67-59 victory.

Brazil has won the last 15 stagings of the South American Championship since 1986. The powerhouse squad boasts of WNBA veterans Iziane Castro and Nadia Colhado, who were both impressive in their semifinal win over the Argentinians. Castro topscored with 19 points while Colhado had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Palmira Marcal is also out to impress after scoring 18 points in their last game.

Other key players for head coach Antonio Barbosa are center Kelly Santos and guard Taina Paixao.

Venezuela, meanwhile, is determined to make history again after reaching the championship game of this tournament for the first time. Do-it-all guard Waleska Perez is again expected to carry the hosts after posting 17 points and 10 rebounds against the Colombians.

Ivaney Marquez, Roselis Silva and Yosimar Corrales are also scoring options for head coach Oscar Silva while US-based Daniela Wallen is expected to make her presence felt in the battle of the boards.

Brazil defeated Venezuela 86-71 in the preliminary round of last year's FIBA Americas Championship in Edmonton. The Brazilians also beat the Venezuelans 84-65 at the 2014 South American Championship in Ambato. Brazil went on to win the gold medal while Venezuela claimed the bronze medal.
