Current Teams and Format

Major League Baseball is the premier professional baseball league in the world. The league currently has 30 teams - 15 each in the American League and National League.

Each league is made up of three divisions. The AL East is composed of the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays while the AL Central is made up of the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins. The AL West features the Houston Astros, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers.

Competing in the NL East are the Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals while featuring in the NL Central are the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals. The teams in the NL West are the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants.

Each team will play a total of 162 games during the regular season. Teams play their division opponents more times compared to teams in other divisions. There will also be selected interleague games where American League teams get to play their National League counterparts.

Four teams in each league will qualify for the postseason. The three divisions winners in each league will automatically get postseason berths while the two non-division champion teams that have the best records will face off in a knockout Wildcard Game. The AL Division Series (ALDS) and NL Division Series (NLDS) will be a best-of-five series. The winners will proceed to the best-of-seven AL Championship Series (ALCS) and NL Championship Series (NLCS). The AL champions and NL champions will then face off in the best-of-seven World Series to determine the champions.

History

Organized baseball has been played in the United States since the 1860s. The National League was established in 1876 and the American League in 1901. Although the two league operated separately, the champions of each league were pitted against each other in the World Series which was first played in 1903.

The New York Yankees hold the record for most World Series titles with 27, including three-straight crowns between 1998 to 2000.

The Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians in seven games in the 2016 World Series to end its 108-year title drought.

MLB has produced countless greats throughout its more than a century of existence. Among the league's greatest hitters are Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Honus Wagner, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Barry Bonds. MLB's greatest pitchers include Walter Johnson, Cy Young, Christy Mathewson, Grover Cleveland Alexander and Roger Clemens.
