After months of waiting Oleksandr Usyk and Dereck Chisora will finally meet on October 31, but will former cruiserweight kingpin continue his rise up the heavyweight ladder with a victory over the former world title challenger?
Road To Oleksandr Usyk v Dereck Chisora
Fight fans have been made to wait for this heavyweight clash for several months. Oleksandr Usyk v Dereck Chisora was originally scheduled for May, only to be shelved amidst the global pandemic that put the sporting world on hold, but the two men will now finally meet on October 31 and Usyk will be determined to make up for lost time as he bids to quickly rise up the heavyweight ladder and land a world title shot, perhaps in 2021.
Usyk made the jump to heavyweight after a glittering career in the cruiserweight division that saw him dominate those ranks. After a glittering career in the amateur ranks Usyk finally crossed over into the professional world in 2013 and he wasted little time in becoming a premier fighter in the cruiserweight division. In only his 10th pro outing he became a world champion by beasting Krzystzof Glowacki over 12 rounds, and after making a couple of successful defences he signed on for the World Boxing Super Series tournament that would crown an undisputed king of the division.
Marco Huck was dispatched in 10 rounds before Usyk added the WBC belt to his collection with a majority decision win over Mairis Briedis, and the now 33-year-old Ukrainian cemented his status as the best in the weight class when he earned a unanimous decision win over Murat Gassiev in the final that saw him walk away with not only his WBC and WBO belts, but the WBA (Super), IBF and Ring Magazine titles. Usyk enjoyed one more successful outing at cruiserweight in November 2018 when he took out Tony Bellew inside eight rounds in his debut fight in England, but his quest to make an immediate impact was halted not long after his debut win over Chazz Witherspoon.
Usyk signed on the dotted line to face former world title contender Dereck Chisora earlier this year, but as we all know that fight soon had to be scrapped because of the global pandemic, putting the former cruiserweight champion’s bid to rapidly climb the heavyweight ladder on ice. However, he will have an opportunity to finally ‘thaw’ out when he faces Chisora on October 31 in what will clearly be his biggest test since moving up to heavyweight.
So can Usyk pick up from where he left off by adding Chisora to his list of victims, or will the experienced heavyweight shock the world, halt the Ukrainian’s rise and inflict on him a first professional defeat? Usyk Chisora Betting Tips & Predictions
Usyk’s heavyweight debut was never going to be answer the question of whether or not he can hang with the big boys in this division, but he did once again showcase his skill, boxing IQ and patience as he picked apart late stand-in Chazz Witherspoon and forced him to retire on his stool.
This fight with Chisora should, however, give us a better idea of where the Ukrainian will stack up in the heavyweight division. ‘Del Boy’… ‘War’…. whatever nickname you want to use for Chisora, may not have had a glittering career by any stretch of the imagination, fighting for the world title on just once occasion, but he is a man who has shared the ring with a who’s who in this division. He has faced multiple current or former world champions so he certainly boasts some pedigree, but the simple fact is that every time he has shared the ring with a top talent, he has been beaten.
David Haye, Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte have all dispatched him inside the distance, and although Chisora has now won three straight, including a couple of quick knockouts, his days as a contender in the heavyweight division and long over. He struggles against fighters who are quick on their feet and in this division there may be no quicker than Usyk, who utilises his outstanding footwork to pick apart opponents with jabs and combinations before getting out of dodge.
Usyk will play it cautious in the first few rounds to avoid getting hit by a big shot out of the blue, but as the rounds progress he will move up through the gears to work over a tiring Chisora. The bookmakers believe that will be the route to a decision win for the former cruiserweight champion, but I believe it will be the recipe for a late stoppage. There will be no highlight reel knockout, but the punishment will ultimately become too much for Chisora to cope with and either his corner team or the referee will come to his rescue.

Usyk Chisora Betting Tips: Fighter Predictions
Oleksandr Usyk: “As a cruiserweight, I reached the highest heights as undisputed Champion and now I am following the same path as a heavyweight. I need to test myself against world class heavyweights on my new road to undisputed and Derek stands in front of me. Many people say that Derek is a monster, but deep down he is a kind man. I don’t expect to see that good side of him. I know that he wants to break me, but I am water, wind and fire all together. Dereck Chisora, I am coming for you.”
Dereck Chisora. “I’m ready for you. I’ve been ready for you all year. It’s my home turf and after such a tough year for everyone, I’m going to give the British public the Halloween party they deserve and finally get revenge for my boy Tony Bellew [who Usyk beat in his final cruiserweight fight]!”
