Terri Harper puts her WBC and IBO super featherweight on the line in Manchester on May 15 as well as challenging for Hyun-Mi Choi’s WBA belt.
Terri Harper v Hyun-Mi Choi Predictions & Tips
Doncaster’s Terri Harper will be looking to add the WBA super featherweight title to her list of accolades when she takes on the undefeated Hyun-Mi Choi at the AO Arena in Manchester.
This will be Harper’s third defence with both WBC and IBO titles, and she will be looking to claim her 12th victory in her 13th professional bout and unify the division.
The 24-year-old is a fans favourite and she comes into this fight on the back of a ninth-round stoppage win over Katharina Thanderz last November.
I am a massive fan of Harper, and you can never accuse her of avoiding the big fights. This will be a tough test for her as she goes up against a fighter who has not lost any of her 19 fights.
Both of these fighters have one little blemish on their record as they have been held for draws. Choi was held to a draw back in May 2009 against Hyo-Min Kim, while Harper and Natasha Jonas played out a thrilling draw in 2020 in what could go down as one of the best female bouts ever.
Harper has plenty of heart, and that will get you a long way in this sport. She is also very talented as well. The women’s bouts are over 10 two-minute rounds and trust me it goes with a blink of an eye. Harper will have to play the patient game with Choi, but I am backing her to do enough in the rounds to win this one on points.
Road To Terri Harper v Hyun Mi Choi
It is always exciting when two champions go toe-to-toe in the ring, and Harper versus Choi deserves to have a crowd inside the arena, but unfortunately, that will not be the case.
The lack of crowd could hinder Harper rather than her opponent. I have been inside the Manchester Arena when Harper has been fighting and the atmosphere was electric, and it no doubt helped her to victory. She will need to dig deep in this one.
Harper won her first world title in 2019 when she defeated Nozipho Bell for the vacant IBO belt, before beating Eva Wahlstrom on points to claim the WBC title.
She was very fortunate to keep hold of her belts when she fought out a stunning draw against Jonas, but she bounced back and showed her class when she stopped Thanderz last year.
Choi, who is the longest-reigning champion in women’s history, won the WBA featherweight title in her first professional fight in 2008 when she beat Xu Chun Yan. She went on to dominate that division before moving up to super featherweight.
She then went on to beat Sainumdoi Superchamps to claim the WBA super featherweight title after previously holding the interim belt. This will be her eighth title defence.
Terri Harper v Hyun Mi Choi: Fighter Predictions
Terri Harper: “It’s exciting that our dream of becoming undisputed super featherweight world champion is taking a step closer to reality with my first unification fight. I’m looking forward to the step-up and fighting an undefeated champion. Choi is the longest-reigning female world champion, and it will be an honour to share the ring with her. I’m more than ready. I’ve been training for this fight since the new year, even with my broken hand. I don’t just want to win; I want to win in style and make a statement.”
Hyun-Mi Choi: “I have waited a very long time for the opportunity to fight for the WBC belt. I am so excited and looking forward to it. My goal has been to unify my weight division for many years and now the time has finally come. I know this fight in England will not be easy. Fighting in another country is extremely difficult but I am prepared for this adventure and challenge. I truly hope the best fighter will win. I have prepared for this opportunity my whole boxing career.”
