The first ever heavyweight boxer to be crowned champion of the world was John L Sullivan back when it was bare knuckle fighting, he lost his title to James J Corbett in 1892 in the first ever boxing fight where the fighters wore gloves.
The longest ever reign goes to American Joe Louis who eas champion for 11 years, eight months and eight days, while Ukraine’s Wladimir Klitschko is next in line, having held his belts for nine years, seven month and six days.
Klitschko holds the title for the longest combined reigns, he had two reigns that spanned over 12 years exactly, while Louis only ever had one reign.
Over the years, the United States of America have produced the most heavyweight champions. On that list of 56 has been Jack Dempsey, Gene Tunney, James J Braddock, Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Buster Douglas, Evander Holyfield and Deontay Wilder.
