Ireland’s Michael Conlan will be looking to get back to winning ways he returns to the ring against Miguel Marriaga on Saturday evening.

Michael Conlan went back to the drawing board following his first professional defeat in March and we will get to witness how he has improved when he faces Miguel Marriaga at the SSE Arena in Belfast.

Conlan suffered his only defeat in his WBA (Regular) featherweight title bout against Leigh Wood at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham.

Both fighter’s exchanged verbal blows before the fight, and Conlan started well when he floored Wood in the first round.

It looked like Conlan was controlling the fight until Wood started to gain some momentum in the latter rounds. Conlan was knocked down in the 11^th despite protests from his corner, then he was sent through the ropes in the 12^th to end the contest.

Conlan was taken to the hospital for checks after it was reported he was unconscious when he went through the ropes. He has recovered and he hopes to put that loss behind him.

Miguel Marriaga is far more experienced than Conlan, but at the age of 35, he is probably more of a stepping stone for Conlan to move closer to another title fight.

The Colombian has won 30 of his 35 fights with five defeats. He has lost two of his last three fights and cone into this bout on the back of a points loss at the hands of Eduardo Ramirez.

Marriaga has been in the ring with Vasliiy Lomachenko, Oscar Valdez and Eduardo Montoya, so he cannot be underestimated.

I am backing Conlan to get back to winning ways with a ninth-round stoppage. I expect him to dominate from the opening bell and finally get his gutsy opponent out of there late in the fight.

It took time and if you ask me now if I’m over it, I’ll still say no as I still want to right the wrong. This fight is the right one to do as it gets me right back into a good place mentally and gets me right back into that (world title) position. I know the reasons why things happened and the only thing I can put it down to is that it was meant to happen that way. Unfortunately, it did so. I just have to get back on the horse. This is my story, my journey and the way it is going to go. It’s not how I thought it would be, but it’s the road I have to travel. This is not an easy fight. I know people are commenting that he is older now, but you don’t have 30 wins and 28 knockouts for no reason. Lomachenko is the only person to stop him, and it wasn’t even really a stoppage, he just retired in the corner. Nicholas Walters and Oscar Valdez couldn’t stop him and they are big-punching guys. I was there when he fought Oscar and it was a war, a Fight of the Year contender, so I know the task ahead and that it’s not going to be an easy fight. I need to be on my ‘A’ game, which I will be.”
