Lewis Ritson will attempt to move a step closer to a world title fight when he takes on Jeremias Ponce at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle on Saturday, June 12.
Lewis Ritson v Jeremias Ponce predictions & tips
Newcastle fighter Lewis Ritson returns to the ring for the first time since October 2020 when he goes up against Argentina boxer Jeremias Ponce in a Final Eliminator for the IBF Super Lightweight World Title.
Ritson has been touted as a potential future world champion for years now, but he will need to be more switched on than he was back in October last year.
The 27-year-old was below par against Miguel Vazquez at the East of England Arena in Peterborough as he was handed a split decision points win to claim the vacant WBA Intercontinental Super Lightweight belt.
‘The Sandman’ was very lucky to have his hand raised against the Mexican, I thought Vazquez at least deserved a draw, and I am very surprised that he hasn’t demanded a rematch.
That fight was behind closed doors, and maybe that affected Ritson. He returns to his native Newcastle on Saturday, and he will have around a thousand of his adoring fans cheering him on – that could be a massive gamechanger against Ponce.
Ponce is undefeated in 27 fights and has knocked out 17 of his opponents, and his last bout was back in December 2020 when he claimed a unanimous points decision victory over Jonathan Jose Eniz.
The 24-year-old was crowned South American Super Lightweight Champion in 2019 by outpointing fellow countryman Leonardo Amitrano before winning the IBO title in his next fight against Rico Muller from Germany.
Ritson will obviously be concerned about going up against an undefeated fighter, but with the crowd fully behind him and his desire to put in a better performance I see him ending this contest late on. I am going for a hometown win for Ritson with a 10th round stoppage.

Lewis Ritson v Jeremias Ponce: Fighter’s Predictions
Lewis Ritson: “It was a strange experience behind closed doors last time so I’m thrilled fans will be returning, it’s always loud in Newcastle and I’m proud to have them behind me cheering me on. Ponce likes to come forward, throw a few good body shots and he’s got a decent jab. We’re expecting and have prepared for a tough fight, and it should be given what’s at stake. I’m one or two fights away from being World Champion now, that’s the dream for any boxer and to be in touching distance now is spurring me on with this Final Eliminator locked in.”
Jeremias Ponce: “I’m really looking forward to the fight. I’ve already become World Champion in Europe when I won the IBO crown against Rico Mueller and after my win against Ritson on June 12 I am aiming to win another World Title. I’m ready to box anyone in my weight class.”
Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn: “This is a huge fight for Lewis Ritson, he is one fight away from a shot at the undisputed championship. We should be having the full 9,000 in Newcastle but right now 1,000 is going to feel like a full house and I can’t wait to see the fans again in Newcastle – I expect this main event to be a war.”
